Procedure boundary: this guide covers a bounded cosmetic depression or gouge in the face of an identified gypsum-board assembly only after support, moisture, movement, hazards, repair material, receiving surface, tool contact, primer or sealer, and topcoat have been admitted as one exact system. It supplies qualitative doer technique, not generic chemistry or a substitute specification.

Job: return a stable, bounded dent, ding, or impact gouge in gypsum-board face paper or locally exposed core to the admitted wall plane and finish without treating a hole, moving assembly, wet board, failed joint, corner injury, plaster defect, or broad skim job as the same repair.

Time: no universal duration applies. The exact repair material, substrate treatment, primer or sealer, coating, environment, and project instructions control working state, cure, sanding readiness, recoat, handling, observation, and return to service. Appearance and touch are not substitutes for those gates.

Difficulty: the hand motion is learnable. Diagnosis, system admission, and honest readback are the work.

Diagnose the defect before opening material

Use ordinary and raking light. Record the cause if known, board and finish condition, nearby joints or corners, moisture signs, and movement.

Admit a bounded face depression

This guide applies only when the damage is a stable local depression or gouge in an identified gypsum-board face, with a bounded bottom or exposed core, sound surrounding board, and no through-opening. The responsible system must expressly accept every exposed layer and the intended finish.

“Dent,” “ding,” and “door-knob gouge” describe appearance or cause. They do not establish depth, area, support, reinforcement, material choice, pass count, or suitability for a flexible knife.

Route point holes to the hole guide

A known empty nail, screw, or anchor hole is a point-void repair. This guide owns damaged face area, not a fastener-hole circuit.

Route any through-opening to a bridge or board repair

If inspection reveals the wall cavity, unsupported edge, missing core, or an opening that will not retain the admitted system, stop. Do not feed an unbounded void or infer reinforcement suitability.

Route joints, tape, corners, plaster, and broad fields away

Exposed, lifted, cracked, or displaced joint tape is a joint repair.

Damage at corner bead, an apex, inside angle, or termination is a corner repair.

Lime, gypsum, or veneer plaster over lath or another plaster base is not paper-faced gypsum board.

A wall-wide low, widespread failed finish, or a request to change the whole plane is not a dent repair.

These boundaries are product-union boundaries too.

Stop for assembly, moisture, movement, and hazards

Do not make a cosmetic fill carry a problem it cannot solve.

Assembly and support stop

Stop on loose board, displaced fasteners, a soft or crumbling field, delaminated layers beyond the admitted system, a damaged backing or framing condition, an unknown rated or protected assembly, service penetrations, or impact that may have affected concealed utilities. A Hammer Head® feature on two candidates does not authorize probing, driving, dimpling, or refastening.

Moisture and contamination stop

Stop on dampness, unexplained staining, swelling, softened paper or core, corrosion, biological growth, odor, salts, or recurring finish failure. Correct the source and obtain required drying, damage, and clearance decisions.

Movement stop

Stop when the depression changes under permitted observation, the surrounding face flexes, a crack continues from it, the edge reopens, or a previous repair has repeatedly returned. Identify attachment, movement, or assembly failure. More finish material is not stabilization.

Legacy-layer and exposure stop

Do not scrape, sand, cut, abrade, drill, wet, heat, or otherwise disturb an unidentified legacy coating, texture, patch, or joint compound. CPSC identifies older wall and ceiling patching or joint compounds and textured paints as possible asbestos locations. Applicable federal, state, Tribal, local, workplace, project, and owner requirements decide testing, controls, personnel, cleanup, and disposal.

This guide clears no lead, asbestos, silica, mold, or other hazard and assigns no PPE or exposure-control configuration.

Admit one complete repair-and-finish system

Determine what may remain and what preparation each permits.

They must accept the actual layers, defect, location, environment, method, preparation, build, and any required treatment.

“Paintable” is not a complete compatibility decision.

Resolve blade material, residue, corrosion, grip exposure, and adjacent contact.

The OSHA mandatory SDS format locates product identity, use restrictions, hazards, handling, exposure controls, incompatibilities, and disposal information. It does not prove substrate or coating compatibility by itself.

Do not blend instructions from different products, borrow a coat count or cure schedule from a sibling guide, or infer that all spackles, joint compounds, patching compounds, primers, or paints behave alike.

Prove the candidate tool and process on a witness

Match the tool or traceable package to one of the six exact models. Inspect the complete tool under its released criteria. Quarantine unresolved residue, corrosion, deformation, edge damage, loose parts, damaged grip or handle, or unknown prior chemistry.

Where the project permits it, make a clean stopped contact check without repair material. Confirm only by observation that the intended working portion can reach the defect, remain supported on sound admitted surface, avoid nearby corners and objects, follow the local plane, and leave without a corner or handle contacting protected finish. Width is one observed identity, not a universal selection formula.

For unfamiliar or consequential systems, carry a representative witness through the complete approved sequence and final viewing. A wet pass proves neither adhesion nor finish compatibility. If a representative witness is impossible and appearance or compatibility matters, retain the hold.

Prepare only under the exact system

Protect surrounding surfaces by the authorized method and recheck all stop conditions immediately before contact.

Perform only the preparation named for the actual layers. This guide does not authorize cutting paper, trimming fibers, digging core, undercutting, abrasion, wetting, solvent wiping, sealing, priming, or reinforcement. Each changes the receiving surface.

Remove dust or contamination only by its named method. If the surface lifts, fuzzes, softens, transfers color, changes sheen, grows the defect, exposes another layer, or reveals a void, stop and reclassify.

Prepare or dispense the repair product exactly as directed. Do not add water, solvent, catalyst, pigment, paint, powder, fiber, or another compound unless expressly allowed. Hold abnormal, expired, contaminated, separated, skinned, or improperly stored material. Keep dried residue out of fresh material and return nothing to the source unless permitted.

Run the qualitative load–place–strike–feather loop

The exact repair instructions control sequence and limits. Where they permit a qualitative flexible-tool method without assigned values, use this loop.

Take a controlled amount for one placement and keep the defect visible. If material strings, crumbles, separates, rolls, stains the tool, slumps, or behaves outside its instructions, stop. Do not change the recipe or force placement.

Bring material into the bounded depression. Cross the low only where the system permits, without forcing material under loose layers or into an unseen cavity.

Pause and inspect. Material that disappears, exposes a soft bottom, lifts paper, reveals movement, will not remain, or enlarges the defect is a stop signal. Do not keep feeding it.

While the material remains in its authorized working state, remove surplus with a continuous controlled path that preserves required fill in the low. Use the surrounding admitted wall as the qualitative plane reference.

A successful strike leaves the depression occupied without a rail, excavated center, torn edge, smear, track, or surface damage. If material pulls out, do not repeat harder. Diagnose material, surface, tool, fit, support, and defect class.

Reduce the transition only after the center survives the strike. Carry the repair toward a clean landing with progressively lighter local contact while preserving the filled center. The purpose is a gradual transition, not a wider blanket of material.

Treat each shoulder independently and preserve sides that land cleanly. Stop on a coherent wet shape. Dry readback, not wet shine, decides whether another operation is needed.

Wet-state readback

At the system’s named inspection point, examine ordinary and raking views for an open center, bridge over a void, exposed core, lifted paper, ridge, hollow, tail, tram line, smear, contamination, new crack, or movement.

Assign PASS TO CONTROLLED HOLD, REWORK AUTHORIZED, or STOP — SYSTEM DISPOSITION REQUIRED. Record the exact tool, material, location, batch or lot where required, observations, and decision owner.

Hold through cure, correction, sanding, primer, and recoat gates

Surface color, coolness, touch, edge hardness, or elapsed time borrowed from another product is not a gate.

At each named state, inspect for sink, cracks, pinholes, bond loss, stain, paper lift, core exposure, or movement. Add material only when permitted; recurrence returns to diagnosis.

Sand or otherwise correct the surface only when the exact repair-and-finish system requires it and supplies the method, readiness condition, abrasive or tool, exposure controls, and acceptance criterion.

Remove residue only as directed. Apply the named primer or sealer only after the repair system admits it; apply topcoat only after the finish system admits it. Keep repair cure, correction readiness, primer readiness, topcoat recoat, handling, final cure, and return to service as separate decisions.

Read back geometry and finish separately

Inspect the admitted dry or corrected repair first from normal room positions, then with light traveling across it from consequential directions. Where meaningful and authorized, use a clean hand or approved plane reference.

Classify what remains:

local high or ridge: use only the permitted correction after the required gate;

local low, sink, or pinhole: add only the system-authorized material; removal cannot fill absence;

visible shoulder: extend only that transition under the admitted finish method;

repeated track: inspect the tool edge and material for damage or residue before any rework;

paper lift, crack, stain, loss of bond, or movement: stop and return upstream;

accepted geometry but different texture, porosity, color, or sheen: route to the finish system. Do not add repair material to a decoration problem.

Inspect again after primer or sealer because a uniform surface can reveal geometry that mottled repair material concealed. Finish acceptance occurs only at the coating system’s named observation state. Wet coating is not the final readback.

What goes wrong — and the controlled recovery

The defect becomes an opening. Stop. Preserve the condition and route it to an admitted bridge or board-replacement method.

Material disappears into the wall. The defect is unbounded or unsupported. Stop feeding it.

The face paper lifts or fuzzes. Preparation, moisture, contact, or material has changed the receiving layer. Stop and obtain the exact torn-paper or exposed-core treatment.

The center pulls out during striking. Diagnose surface, material state, support, tool condition, and fit. More force is not adhesion.

The center sinks at the next gate. Use another placement only if the exact system permits it. Recurring loss requires reclassification.

Two tracks follow the tool. Inspect for edge damage, dried residue, corner loading, or an unproved fit. Correct the cause before rework.

The repair becomes a broad hump. Stop adding material. Use only the authorized plane correction after the required state.

A crack runs from the repair. Treat it as movement, attachment, joint, or assembly evidence, not a cosmetic feather defect.

A stain returns. Reopen the moisture or contamination diagnosis. More coating is not source control.

The repair is flat but visible after paint. Separate texture, porosity, color, and sheen from geometry. Follow the witness-proven finish correction.

This guide does not select or install a door stop.

Cleanup residue marks the next repair. Quarantine the tool and affected work. Visible wiping is not proof of chemical or color neutrality.

Cleanup, storage, and waste

End contact while the exact material’s cleanup route remains available. Keep source product, working portion, rejected material, cured and uncured residue, dust, wipes, protection, and cleanup output separated and identified.

Stainless or solvent-resistant identity does not authorize immersion, unnamed cleaner, or overmold contact.

Close and store products only as directed. Route waste through the exact label, SDS, hazard determination, local requirements, and project plan. This guide authorizes no sink, drain, soil, ordinary-trash, recycling, or hazardous-waste path.

Record final defect classification, tool and material identities, preparation, holds, observed states, corrections, primer and coating identities, acceptance views, final disposition, and any monitoring obligation.

Is a door-knob dent the same as a door-knob hole?

This guide requires a bounded face depression with no through-opening. If the cavity is visible or the repair lacks a supported bottom, route to an admitted bridge or board-replacement method.

Which of the six Hyde knives should I use?

All six are conditional candidates with manufacturer support for flexible applying and smoothing. Width and series help identify the candidates; neither proves fit or compatibility.

Do I need mesh, paper tape, a patch plate, or another reinforcement?

This guide selects none. Use reinforcement only when the exact repair system requires and identifies it for the actual defect, layers, location, and finish. A through-opening belongs to another job.

What compound should I use?

Use only the exact repair product admitted by the actual board layers, defect, exposure, preparation, finish, and project requirements. Generic material names do not establish chemistry or suitability.

How many coats are required?

No universal coat count applies. The selected system and observed state decide whether another authorized placement is required.

How long before sanding, priming, or painting?

Use the named readiness and recoat gates in the current instructions for the exact repair material, primer or sealer, and topcoat under actual conditions. This guide supplies no clock.

Should I cut away torn paper or seal exposed core?

Only if the exact admitted system requires that action and identifies the treatment. Cutting or sealing changes the receiving surface and cannot be inferred from trade habit.

Why can I still see a repair that feels flat?

Raking light may reveal a shallow geometry change, while primer or paint may reveal texture, absorption, color, or sheen differences. Name the failure class before correcting it.

History footnote

The bounded drywall dent is a repair of the panel-wall era. U.S. Patent 520,123, issued to Augustine Sackett in 1894, describes an interior wall covering built from plaster and paper layers; that layered construction is the historical ancestor of a face-paper-and-gypsum repair problem. The patent does not teach this modern repair method, and no inventor, patent origin, first date, blade geometry, or historical compound recipe is claimed for the generic dent-filling pass.

Panel walls made local impact damage ordinary. Hyde’s current families document today’s applying-and-smoothing tools, not who first used one on a gypsum-board dent.
