  • The flex that makes it a good spreader makes it useless at removal — pushed into failed paint or hardened glazing it flexes away from the work instead of lifting it, and used as a pry bar it takes a permanent set.
  • Strip and scrape with the stiff blades (06158, 06258, 06308); fill with this.
  • Nor is it a finishing blade: the standard flex has the backbone to press filler into a dent but not the limberness to wipe a final skim coat to a feathered zero — that's the SuperFlexx 06257's job.
  • And keep the overmold grip out of solvent soaks; the cushioned handle isn't built to live in lacquer thinner the way a nylon or hardwood handle is.

Angle governs everything

steep to load material into a defect, then nearly flat to shear it off and feather the edges — the wider the blade, the more the flat pass matters, because you're leveling across a larger span and any tilt leaves a ridge on one corner. Thin coats beat thick ones: two or three light passes over a dent shrink less, crack less, and sand faster than one heavy fill. Let the flex do the leveling: ride the blade from sound surface across the low spot and back onto sound surface so the compound sits flush, rather than pressing a mound that you then have to sand flat. Carbon care, stated for this knife: the high-carbon blade holds a keener, straighter edge than stainless and hones back easily, but it will rust — wipe it dry after any water-based compound, and never leave it sitting in a wet tub, or it blooms orange and can streak the next white patch. That maintenance is the price of the carbon edge, and the stainless 06228 is the knife for anyone unwilling to pay it.

Apply or scrape?
Apply. It's a 2" flexible fill-and-smooth knife. Scrape with the stiff siblings.
How is it different from the 1-1/2" (06101)?
Width only — the 2" is for patches and dents, the narrower for holes and trim. (§5)
Should I get carbon or stainless at 2"?
Carbon (this) hones keener but must be kept dry; the 06228 is stainless and maintenance-free with wet compound. (§5)
What's the Hammer Head?
A hardened butt for tapping popped fasteners down and dimpling before you fill — no separate hammer. (§2d)
Can I use it for body filler / epoxy?
Yes for spreading, but wipe the carbon blade before the resin cures; for repeated resin work the stainless 06228 is the better blade. (§2e)
Lead paint?
Any incidental scraping in a pre-1978 building is under the standard lead-safe boundary — assume lead, contain and wet, follow RRP practice.
