  • It is not a compliance device, and this is the honest line.
  • Capturing debris at the blade reduces the mess and the airborne load, but "dust-free" is a product name, not a lead-safety certification.
  • On pre-1978 paint, dust capture does not replace the EPA RRP requirements — certified firm on paid work, containment, wet methods — and its debris-control value is real only with a HEPA-rated vacuum; a shop vac without HEPA filtration can pass fine lead dust straight through and out the exhaust.
  • Pair it with HEPA and treat it as one control among the required several, never as the permission slip.
  • Beyond that: it is not a push tool (the carbide edge planes on the pull), not a putty knife (no fill role), not a glass razor, and not a pry bar.

Pull, don't push

steep presentation, blade drawn toward you, downforce over the edge, second hand on the knob for stubborn work. The full pull-stroke doctrine is the scrapers line doc's and isn't restated here. Specific to the 09190: keep the shroud in contact with the surface so the capture airflow stays sealed; a shroud lifted off the work loses its dust — the tool only collects what the vacuum can reach at the blade. Match the vac: any common wet/dry vac fits via the included adapter, but for the dust-control jobs this tool implies, the vacuum should be HEPA-rated (below). Carbide care: flip the 2-sided blade for the second edge, then replace with the 2" 2-edge carbide blades the line uses (11171 25-pack / 11172 5-pack, which fit both this tool and the 10610) ⚑(part-number fitment is packet-grounded; confirm the on-package callout). Never file carbide; never pry with it — its hardness is brittle, and corner-striking or levering chips it.

Does it really work with any vacuum?
It comes with a 6-foot hose and an adapter to fit common wet/dry vacs. For the dust-control jobs it's meant for, use a HEPA-rated vacuum — see below.
Is it "dust-free" enough for lead paint?
It captures debris at the blade, which helps — but the name is not a certification. On pre-1978 paint, follow RRP in full and pair the tool with a HEPA vacuum; dust capture is one control, not compliance.
How long does the carbide last?
Long — carbide holds its edge across jobs where steel dulls in passes, and the blade is 2-sided for twice the working life before replacement. A specific multiple over steel isn't something to quote .
Can I sharpen the blade?
Not with a file — carbide won't take one. Flip to the second edge, then replace with the 2" carbide blades (11171/11172) .
What's the knob for?
Two things: added leverage for aggressive pulling, and a Hammer-Head to reset popped nails as you scrape.
