Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Latex and waterborne paint — the absolute natural-bristle prohibition.
  • Trim, sash, and small furniture — 4" is far too wide to control on detail; drop to the 2" 80452 or a trim brush.
  • Cutting lines — a straight 4" is a coverage tool, not a cutting tool; cut edges with a sash and fill the field with this.
  • The finest furniture varnish — width and the stiffer black bristle are both wrong for that; softer, narrower brushes own show finishing.

THE JOB, THE REASON, AND THE BETTER TOOL

How the pros run it

01

Manage the weight

A 4" brush loaded with oil paint is heavy; load it well but not to the ferrule, and let the width do the work rather than pressing. No water, ever — clean in solvent, comb, shape, dry. Keep the wet edge moving — the whole reason to run 4" is speed across area, and that only pays if you never brush back into a setting lap. Back-brush exterior and lay off with the board so the tips draw the grain. Wash the heel out thoroughly — a wide head hides a lot of heel where oil can dry and splay the brush; this is the failure that ends a good brush's life, tip still perfect, heel a solid block.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
Latex?
Never — this is oil, alkyd, varnish, and oil-stain only.
Why the 4" instead of the 3"?
Coverage — siding, fences, and big flats go faster; you trade away the fine control the 3" and 2" keep.
Can I cut edges with it?
No — it is a broad lay-off brush; cut with a sash and fill the field with this.
Is it good for decks?
For finished siding and fence stain, yes; for rough decking flood-and-wipe, a dedicated thick stain brush is purpose-built.
How is it different from the 80453?
Same black-bristle beaver-tail family; this is the wider 4" field size, the 80453 the 3" broad-work size.
