Is this the right tool for your job?

DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Stiff-blade work — drywall, rigid foam, hand-pressure scoring — where the 9mm flexes and the 18mm (42047) holds the line.
  • Leveraged and abusive cutting, which cracks a snap segment and belongs to the trapezoid knives (42020/42083).
  • Occasional light use where the working-build upgrade is money unspent — the economy 42036 is the honest match for a DIY drawer or a weekend hang.
  • And it is not a policy carton knife (Switchblades 42060/42065) or a brittle-sheet scorer (45730), both of which sit outside the snap-off class entirely.

How the pros run it

01

Trust the auto-lock, but respect its logic

It clamps wherever the slide stops, which is fast and set-and-forget — the trade-off against a 2-piece positive lock is that a positive lock is a deliberate two-step for a blade you want absolutely fixed; for constant-change precision work, the auto-lock is the right pattern, but know the difference when a cut is deep and side-loaded. Keep the blade short. Precision is a short-cantilever property regardless of build — a segment or two out of the nose; run it far and even this body cannot stop the slim blade flexing. Snap on a schedule. Every few cuts in wallpaper and film, before the drag, not after — the working build gives you three blades of runway, so there is no excuse to ride a dull point. Mind the stainless track. It is the wear surface you paid for; keep grit out of the slide so it stays crisp, and the auto-lock keeps its bite. Contain your segments. A snapped 9mm point is the sharpest small waste on any job — cap-and-snap into a sharps tin, never loose.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
Why is this store showing the knife twice?
A listing quirk: h-42045 and 79423420450 are the same product, the second handle being its UPC with the leading zero dropped. They should be merged; there is no difference between them to choose.
What exactly am I paying up for over the 42036?
Three things: an auto-lock slide (one-motion set-and-hold), a stainless steel blade track (the wear surface that keeps the slide from loosening under heavy use), and three blades in the handle instead of one.
Is the auto-lock as secure as a positive lock?
For continuous precision work with constant extension changes it is the better pattern — fast and set-and-forget. A 2-piece positive lock is the more deliberate hold for a deep, side-loaded blade; that pattern is on the 42036/42047, not here.
Is the whole knife stainless?
No — the body is high-impact polystyrene; the stainless steel is the blade track. The blade is standard carbon snap-off steel.
How short should I keep the blade?
A segment or two — the 9mm is precise only at short extension, whatever the body.

Absolutely the best!

Use only these! Last forever! Unlike cheap $2 knockoffs.

Small blade knife

They are my favorite knife to use at work. Your star system for review is a little confusing though. I think the top rating is ‘the most’ stars but I’m not sure.

very good for what I use it for.

Best quality snap off knife I can get. Priced very fairly. Would be willing to pay more for the same knife with improved components that wear longer... But One knife will last me 3 to 6 months before the components break or wear out. So, That's pretty good!
