Is this the right tool for your job?

DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Belting cover and dense reinforced rubber or gasket — the .065" flexes under that load whether guarded or not; buy the .083" 60510 (guarded) or 60450 (bare).
  • Deep or dense foam — the hollow-ground 60180/60480.
  • The most delicate close-in trimming where you'd choke onto the blade — the guard blocks it; use the bare 60090.
  • Heavy sole leather — the numbered heavy bench knives.
  • And it is not a pry bar, scraper, or striking tool.

How the pros run it

01

Low angle, sliced cut, tensioned material

The guard changes none of the textile fundamentals: lay the blade down to slice, keep the goods under tension, and pull the edge through cleanly. A dull or steep blade drags weave no matter how safe the handle.
02

Seat your grip on the guard

Let the finger stop set a repeatable hand position — the same seating every cut. That consistency is part of what the safety handle buys you beyond the raw hand-stop.
03

Respect the edge despite the guard

The finger guard stops a slip; it does not make it safe to cut toward your other hand. Keep the free hand behind the blade's travel. Treat the guard as insurance, not permission.
04

Maintain the high-carbon edge

Hone on a stone, strop, wipe dry after damp work. The 60120 lives on cloth and light sheet, which shows a dull edge instantly as drag and fray — keep it keen.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
What's different from the 60090?
Only the safety handle's finger guard. Same 4" × 1" × .065" blade and cut.
Why guard such a light knife?
Because safety rules are written per crew, not per cut — a guarded-knife floor needs the light cutting jobs guarded too — and for wet or slick hands.
Does the guard limit control?
It blocks choking fully onto the blade for the most delicate trims; otherwise the cut is identical to the 60090.
Can it cut belting?
No — the .065" is too light; use the .083" 60510 (guarded) or 60450 (bare).
Wood or soft-grip handle?
Listings say "Safety Wood Handle"; the catalog says "soft-grip handle with built-in finger guard" — the guard is certain; the handle-material wording is being reconciled.
