DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Latex and water-based coatings — natural bristle can't meet water; the polyester 4″ 80304, the yellow-handled twin, is the water-based field brush.
  • Fine and detail work — at four inches this brush overhangs trim, muntins, and narrow members, all of which belong to the 2″/1-1/4″ white-bristle flats, the trim brushes, and the sash.
  • Clean cut-in lines — the angled sash owns those.
  • And flooding a big exterior deck or fence in stain — the wide mixed-bristle stain brushes (80202/80203) are the better flood tools, with this brush better kept for oil finishing and back-brushing.

How the pros run it

01

Load

tip half, moderate, pressed even — a 4″ natural brush carries a large volume of finish and dumps it if loaded to the heel. Decant clear finishes to keep bubbles out. Lay, cross-spread, tip off, stop — and never rework a setting film. Grain direction and a planned wet edge across a big surface, worked in sections. Two hands and a moving stance — four inches of loaded natural bristle is heavy over a day. Why natural bristle: it self-levels oil and shrugs off solvent; it drowns in water. Cleaning: solvent into the heel until clear, then soap and water, comb straight, reshape, dry flat or hung — the most bristle in the white-bristle line and the most costly to ruin by letting finish cure in the heel, so clean into the ferrule every time. Oil-rag fire rule applies at cleanup.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
When do I want four inches of white bristle?
For big flat oil jobs — tabletops, flush doors, broad panels, wide siding — in varnish, oil enamel, or oil stain, where coverage and self-leveling both matter (§1, §2a).
Latex or oil?
Oil only; natural bristle drowns in water. Use the polyester 4″ 80304 for latex (§4, §5).
General Purpose or Premier?
Store says General Purpose (green handle); the official family page it maps to says "Premier Series (White Bristles)." Authored at the store grade, divergence flagged (evidence spine, 1).
This or a stain brush for my deck?
This for oil finishing and back-brushing a panel; the wide mixed-bristle stain brushes (80202/80203) for flooding stain into a big deck or fence (§2c, §5).
Oil rags?
Fire hazard — dry flat and separated or submerge in water in a sealed metal can; never pile them (§2c).
