CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Oil and varnish — the white-bristle 4″ 80354 is the oil-side twin; natural bristle lays alkyd and varnish flat where polyester can mark them.
  • Fine work of any kind — at four inches this brush has no business near a muntin, a sash line, a narrow board, or a clean cut, all of which belong to sash, trim, and narrow flats; it overhangs anything narrower than itself.
  • Detail and control jobs — those are the 1-1/4″ 80301's and the trim brushes' work.
  • And staining — penetrating stain wants a stain brush's blended, load-holding body to flood and scrub pigment in, not a paint flat that lays a film on top.

THE JOB, THE REASON, AND THE BETTER TOOL

How the pros run it

01

Load

tip third only, pressed even — the single most important habit with a 4″ brush, because the volume it can hold is exactly the volume it can spill. Two hands and a stance: four inches loaded is heavy and long; a relaxed grip and a moving stance beat a white-knuckle wrist over a day. Lay, spread, tip off: cover, level thin, then one light directional pass to pull the ridges down. Wet edge in sections: the wider the swath, the faster the edge dies — plan the field in reachable blocks. Polyester, in practice: holds its backbone in water and washes clean without the reshaping ritual a natural bristle needs — the water-based brush by design. Cleaning: wash latex out warm and soapy while wet, driving the suds all the way into the heel of a big fill until the rinse runs clear, comb straight, wrap or hang flat. A 4″ brush is the most bristle in the flat lineup and the most expensive to ruin by letting paint cure in the heel — clean it into the ferrule every time.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
When do I actually want four inches?
When the surface is big and flat — flush doors, siding, soffits, panels, fences — and the job is coverage, not control (§1, §2a).
Latex or oil?
Latex and water-based; polyester holds its backbone wet. For oil or varnish, use the white-bristle 4″ 80354 (§4, §5).
Isn't a 4″ brush hard to control?
It is on anything narrow — that's why it overhangs trim and why the 3″ and 1-1/4″ exist. On big flat fields it's the fast tool (§4, §5).
The title doesn't list the bristle — how do you know it's polyester?
The line doc places this size in the polyester, yellow-handle GENERAL PURPOSE group with the 80301/80303; the title itself states only width and series, which this guide flags (evidence spine, 1).
Can I use it to stain?
No — it lays a film; stain wants a stain brush that floods and works pigment in (§4).
