CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Not a paint brush — film coatings want laying and leveling, and this brush is built to scrub stain in; use a paint flat for house paint, enamel, or solid deck color.
  • Not a clear-finish brush — varnish and polyurethane show every scrub mark, so oil finishing goes to a fine white-bristle flat, not a stain brush.
  • Not the broad-field tool: at three inches it is the narrower half of the stain pair, and a deck of wide boards or a big fence face is faster with the 4″ 80202 or a roller-and-back-brush pass.
  • And not a detail brush for spindles and muntins narrower than its own face — that is a small trim or sash brush's job.

tips wet, heel dry — fill to the ferrule and the brush carries stain up into the stock and sheds it as drips and blotches. Pressure: flex the bristle and feel the drag; a floated stain brush works nothing in. Direction: with the grain every stroke. Stir: at every refill — pigment settles fast. Mixed bristle, read honestly: natural filament carries oil generously but wilts in water; synthetic holds its spring in water but carries oil less; the blend is the both-bases middle, master of neither (class knowledge, not a Richard spec). Handle note: the plastic handle shrugs off the water of a waterborne stain and the mineral spirits of an oil cleanup alike — no drying ritual, unlike a bare wood handle — but it earns no solvent-resistance claim here beyond ordinary use . Cleaning: solvent to match the base (mineral spirits for oil, soapy water for waterborne), worked through until no color sheds, combed straight, dried flat or hung. Clean into the heel, always — a brush dies where the bristle meets the ferrule, not at the tip. And the fire rule governs cleanup day too.

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
What's the difference between this and the 4″ 80202?
Width and handle only: three inches on a plastic handle versus four inches on a wood handle. Pick this one for pickets, furniture, and narrow boards, and for a lighter brush through a long day; pick the 4″ for broad deck boards and siding (§5).
Oil or water-based stain?
Both — the mixed-bristle face is the both-bases compromise (class knowledge, not a published rating). Clean to match the base you used (§3).
Is the packet really empty for this model?
Yes — its only record is the store title, so this guide is written at title-and-class grain and flags where it leans on the 80202 sibling and the line doc for family knowledge (gate, top of page).
Can I use it for paint or varnish?
No — it floods and scrubs stain in; paint and clear finishes want laying and leveling, which is a paint flat's or a fine white-bristle flat's job (§4).
What about the brush and rags after an oil-stain day?
Fire hazard — dry flat and separated outdoors or submerge in water in a sealed metal can; never pile them (§2, safety rule).
