Latex and water-based anything — this is the cardinal rule.
Put latex, acrylic, or a water-borne enamel in white natural bristle and it swells, goes limp, and flares within minutes; the polyester 1-1/4″ 80301, the yellow-handled twin, is the water-based brush.
It is also not a coverage brush — a 1-1/4″ face on a door or a tabletop is a long day; step up to the 2″ 80352 or 4″ 80354 in white bristle for broad oil work.
It is not a precision cut-in brush; the angled sash cuts the clean line.
And it is not the flooding tool for a big deck or fence — that is the wide mixed-bristle stain brush's job (80202/80203).

How the pros run it

Load

the tip half of a natural brush, moderate — natural bristle carries oil generously, and a controlled load lays a better film than a heavy one. Lay, spread, tip off, stop: the oil-coating rhythm; the sin is overbrushing a setting film. With the grain, always. Wet edge: oil is slower than latex but still skins — work wet into dry. Why natural bristle here: tapered, flagged hog bristle self-levels oil in a way polyester can't, and it doesn't mind solvent; its price is that it cannot meet water. Cleaning — different from a synthetic brush: clean in the coating's solvent (mineral spirits/paint thinner for oil paint, stain, and most varnishes), working the solvent into the heel until it runs clear, then wash in warm soapy water, rinse, comb straight, reshape the tip, and dry flat or hung. Natural bristle must be dried and stored in shape or it sets flared and useless. And a brush dies at the heel — finish left to cure where the bristle meets the ferrule ends the brush — so clean into the heel every time. The oil-rag fire rule governs cleanup day too.

Can I use this with latex?

No — natural bristle absorbs water, goes limp, and flares. Use the polyester 80301 for latex; keep this brush for oil, alkyd, varnish, and oil stain (§1, §4).

What is it best at?

Laying clear oil finishes and oil enamel on narrow trim and small work, where natural bristle levels flatter than synthetic (§2a, §2b).

How do I clean a natural-bristle brush?

Solvent first (mineral spirits for oil), then soap and water, comb, reshape the tip, and dry flat or hung — natural bristle must be stored in shape (§3).

What about oil rags afterward?

Fire hazard — dry flat and separated outdoors or submerge in water in a sealed metal can; never pile them (§2c).

Why is it called General Purpose when the official page says Premier?

The store lists it as General Purpose on a green handle; the A. Richard family page it maps to is titled "Premier Series (White Bristles)." This guide follows the store's mid-grade identity and flags the divergence — don't read a premium build into it from the page title (evidence spine, 1).
