How to Prepare a Casing Injury for Patching
Job: prepare an already authorized casing injury for the next named patch-system operation without erasing evidence, overcutting the casing, or confusing a clean preparation with an approved repair.

Time: procedure-controlled. Inspection, stop decisions, and drying—not knife speed—set the pace.
Difficulty: trained tire-repair work. The knife motions are simple; the hard part is knowing what must remain untouched and when new evidence cancels the preparation.

Everything else: a stable casing stand or cradle; lighting and inspection aids; marking and recording equipment; the current tire/casing-manufacturer limits; the selected repair-system procedure and its named preparation, cleaning, dust-control, and inspection equipment; the employer's wheel-service procedure; and PPE selected for the actual hazards and products. Hyde supplies the two hand-knife geometries in this guide.

Before you start: bind the casing, the injury, and the system
Establish zero energy and quarantine
Do not inspect an injury with either knife while the tire is mounted, partly inflated, or of uncertain pressure status. The casing must reach this bench through the facility's applicable wheel-service procedure.
Identify the tire or casing, its work order, and the wheel position or service-history reference before separating parts.
Have a trained wheel-service person completely deflate and demount it by the procedure for that rim-wheel class. OSHA's large-vehicle rim-wheel rule requires trained employees, complete deflation by valve-core removal before demounting, current servicing information, and the recommended tools. Its stated scope is not universal to every automobile tire, but zero pneumatic energy and full demounting remain the entry boundary for this guide.
Verify the tire is fully off the wheel. An outside-only inspection cannot show inner-liner damage, the injury's inside exit, evidence of underinflated running, or prior hidden work. USTMA likewise requires passenger/light-truck repairs to begin with removal from the rim/wheel assembly and a complete inspection.
Tag the casing HOLD — INSPECTION/PREPARATION and place it in a stable repair cradle. Keep it segregated from mountable inventory. No clean appearance, completed knife pass, or missing shift note may silently remove that hold.
If the casing arrives mounted, pressure status cannot be proven, or its identity has been separated from its history, stop before cleaning or cutting.
Preserve the as-received injury
Preparation removes rubber and can erase the evidence needed to classify the injury. Record first.
Mark the apparent outside entry and corresponding inside location without widening either.
Photograph or otherwise record both sides, the injury path as received, nearby prior work, and the surrounding casing condition.
Survey the entire casing, not only the obvious wound. Look for conditions the shop's inspection sheet treats as possible underinflation, heat, impact, separation, inner-liner, bead, reinforcement, contamination, or prior-repair evidence.
Record its direction before disturbing the path.
Clean only enough to see and classify. Do not scrub, solvent-wash, ream, pare, or buff away an ambiguous condition merely to obtain a neater inspection.
This page intentionally gives no universal list of repairable locations, sizes, angles, casing classes, or prior-repair combinations. Those are repair-system and tire/casing-manufacturer decisions. A tool that can reach an injury does not make that injury eligible.
Classify before any material is removed
The authorized inspector must place the injury into one of three lanes:
Do not make it look “repair-ready.”
Do not explore with the taper point.
“We always patch these,” a repair unit on the shelf, or the registered Hyde tool pair is not a classification. The selected system—not habit—must say what preparation is permitted.
Read the controlling procedure at the casing
casing and injury identifiers;
classification and authorizer;
procedure and revision;
which operation, if any, is assigned to the 61260-type taper point;
which operation, if any, is assigned to the 61350-type flexible skiver;
the system's marks, stop boundaries, cleanliness test, drying test, and inspection hold point;
the next named operation and its authorized recipient.
Do not blend procedures from different repair-material systems. A preparation sequence is a compatibility chain: its cleaning, surface preparation, repair unit, inspection, and later processes were specified together. This guide deliberately does not reproduce the system's dimensions or chemistry. If the current procedure is not physically or electronically available to the operator, the job is not ready to begin.
Set up the two knives and the work
Inspect the tools; buy by motion, not by resemblance
Both tools are fixed-blade high-carbon trade knives, but they are not substitutes.
Buyer test 1 — where is the controlled cut?
If the authorized hand operation is to dress the injury path from within, the 61260 is the relevant geometry. Its taper widens continuously behind the point, so seating depth changes how much of the path the edge reaches.
If the authorized hand operation is to shave a thin layer from the curved casing surface, the 61350 is the relevant geometry. Its flexible blade can ride the curve at a shallow attitude.
If the procedure assigns both operations, the bench needs both. If it assigns only one—or assigns a powered or system-specific tool instead—the unused Hyde knife stays stored.
Buyer test 2 — what must the blade do under load?
The H2T must remain controlled in the path. It is not a pry, probe, awl, or general gouge.
The K770 must flex along the surface. It is not a channel reamer, through-cutter, reinforcement cutter, or scraper.
Inspect each blade for cracks, chips, bends, corrosion, rolled edge, or an altered point/profile. Check handle, ferrule, and rivets for looseness, splits, and contamination. A dull blade is not safer: it demands more force, tears instead of cuts, and makes an overshoot harder to stop. Remove a defective tool from service rather than straightening or improvising a repair.
Keep the two knives in distinct safe locations so a technician cannot grab the K770 for a probing motion or the H2T for broad surface paring. Account for both before and after the job.
Workholding and PPE are part of cut control
Support the fully demounted casing so it cannot roll, collapse, spring, or rotate unexpectedly. Reposition the casing to keep each knife stroke away from the torso and away from the support hand; never accept a toward-body stroke because moving the casing is inconvenient. Another person's hands, knees, or feet are not a casing fixture.
The practical minimum decisions for this sequence are:
side-protected eye protection for hand cutting and debris; add face protection where flying-particle or splash hazards warrant it;
task-appropriate cut protection for the support hand and exposed body areas, provided it preserves grip and control;
close-fitting clothing and safety footwear appropriate to handling the casing;
chemical-resistant gloves, ventilation, and any additional eye, skin, or respiratory protection required for the named cleaner or other system material;
a separate powered-tool assessment for any later brushing, drilling, or buffing operation.
OSHA requires PPE selection from a workplace hazard assessment and appropriate eye/face protection where flying particles or chemical hazards are present. Do not carry hand-knife glove assumptions into rotating equipment: guarding, entanglement, dust, noise, tool speed, and PPE must come from that equipment's own procedure.
The controlled preparation
Mark the system boundary and call the first hold point
Match the casing and injury to the work card. Mark only the area the current procedure authorizes. Preserve the original entry/exit and inspection marks until the procedure says they may be replaced. A marked boundary is a stop control, not permission to remove everything inside it.
Call out and record:
zero energy/demounted — verified;
as-received inspection — recorded;
system/procedure/revision — present;
preparation operations — assigned;
casing hold — active.
If any line cannot be read back, stop. This verbal or written pause prevents the common sequence inversion of cutting first and deciding later.
Ream only the authorized injury path with the 61260
Skip this step if the controlling procedure does not assign a hand taper-point operation.
Orient the casing so the injury path and the far side of the point are visible or otherwise controlled. Know where the tip can emerge.
Hold the 61260 as a cutting instrument, not a lever. Begin with the least seating and shortest controlled motion that lets the edge read the path.
Work around the ragged perimeter in progressive passes. Let the taper shave; do not stab, twist against reinforcement, or pry the path open.
Withdraw often. Remove loose debris by the permitted method, illuminate the path, and compare what has appeared with the recorded classification.
Keep the path aligned with the authorized injury. Do not use deeper seating to “make it round,” match an assumed repair unit, or chase a smooth-looking bore. Any required finished shape belongs to the named system instruction, not to this general guide.
Stop immediately on unexpected reinforcement condition, hidden branching, separation, heat evidence, prior repair material, contamination, a path different from the recorded direction, or a greater extent than the authorization describes.
End at the system's inspection hold point. A ragged edge no longer visible is not, by itself, completion evidence.
The transferable technique is ream around, inspect, and stop. “Push until the taper fits” is not a technique; it is uncontrolled enlargement.
Pare only the authorized casing surface with the 61350
Skip this step if the controlling procedure does not assign hand paring/skiving.
Rotate the casing so the K770 can travel away from the body with the support hand behind the edge.
Lay the flexible blade at a shallow shaving attitude. The blade should follow the casing curve and lift a controlled shaving; it should not dig a trench.
Use short drawing passes. Several light passes preserve more inspection opportunities than one forceful pass.
Read the surface after each small group of cuts. Clear loose material by the approved method and inspect under direct light before cutting again.
Remove only the condition and area the procedure assigns to hand paring. Do not chase color, cosmetic uniformity, or an undefined idea of “fresh rubber.”
Do not cut or polish away unexpected reinforcement, liner damage, prior repair evidence, softness, heat evidence, or contamination. Stop, protect the surface, and return the casing for reclassification.
End at the specified contour/condition and inspection hold point. Do not blend an overcut to hide it.
The K770's flex is useful only while the operator lets it follow the surface. Side-loading the blade to force a tighter turn, bearing down through chatter, or using the tip as a scraper defeats the tool.
Clean, dry, and protect—by the selected system only
Hand cutting leaves particles; inspection and later adhesion require a controlled surface. The system's cleaning order matters because cleaning too late, using an unapproved material, touching a prepared area, or driving debris into it can invalidate the work.
Remove loose cuttings and dust with the exact noncontaminating method named in the procedure. Do not blow debris across the shop or into the injury unless the procedure and air-quality controls explicitly allow it.
Use only the selected system's approved cleaning material and applicator. This guide gives no substitute solvent, mixture, or improvised degreaser.
Keep bare hands, dirty gloves, oily air lines, vacuum nozzles, bench surfaces, and unapproved markers off the prepared area.
Allow the surface to become dry by the procedure's stated test and environmental conditions. “It has been sitting awhile” and “it looks matte” are not universal dryness tests.
If the cleaned area is touched, wetted, dusted, or otherwise contaminated, mark the deviation and follow the system's re-preparation instruction. Do not silently wipe and continue.
Protect the clean, dry area from traffic while it awaits inspection. The casing remains on hold.
Any powered preparation the repair system requires after the hand-knife operations is a separate named step with its own tool, texture, speed, dust, and PPE controls. The 61260 and 61350 do not replace it, and this page does not prescribe it.
Readback and handoff
Read the prepared injury back against the work card
The operator and receiving inspector should be able to reconstruct what happened without guessing. Read back:
casing identity, work order, and injury identifier;
zero-energy, fully demounted, quarantined status;
as-received record and whole-casing inspection completion;
which Hyde knife operations were authorized and actually performed;
path and surface observations before, during, and after preparation;
every unexpected finding, stop, overcut, contamination event, or deviation;
clean-method completion and the system-defined dry confirmation;
photographs, measurements, or inspection marks required by the controlling procedure;
current hold status and the exact next authorized recipient/operation.
Then choose one return envelope:
PREPARATION HOLD — READY FOR NAMED SYSTEM INSPECTION/NEXT STEP. All assigned preparation operations and readback fields are complete; no unresolved evidence remains; the casing is still isolated.
PREPARATION STOPPED — RECLASSIFICATION REQUIRED. New evidence, uncertainty, contamination, tool damage, a procedure conflict, or a process deviation exists. Protect the area and send it back to the authorized classifier.
None of these envelopes declares the repair complete, the tire roadworthy, or the casing returned to service.
What goes wrong—and the recovery

The history footnote: two old knife motions met at the rubber bench
Hyde began in Southbridge, Massachusetts, making industrial knives for the region's shoe and textile factories in the early-to-mid 1870s; Hyde's own company-history surfaces retain a 1870/1875 date tension, so this page does not force a single founding year. The two motions in this guide come from that maintained-edge world. Reaming uses a point whose widening geometry dresses a path from inside. Skiving lays a thin blade low and shaves a surface—an old leather-bench operation that migrated naturally to curved rubber casings.
What survives in Hyde's 2024 catalog is unusually concrete: H2T 61260 is still assigned to ragged cuts in tire casings, and K770 61350 is still assigned to rough spots in tire casings. The catalog proves the patterns and their jobs survive; it does not establish when either pattern entered tire service, who designed it, what the H2T or K770 codes originally meant, or a universal repair sequence.

Target casing class unresolved: Hyde says “tire casings” for both knives but does not identify passenger, light-truck, commercial, retread, off-road, agricultural, aircraft, or another class. This guide therefore refuses class-specific repair limits.
Those stay system-controlled and intentionally absent here.
PPE detail is site/system-specific: cut rating, chemical-glove material, ventilation, respiratory protection, powered-tool guarding, noise, dust control, and tool-speed limits require the employer assessment, SDS, and named equipment instructions.
K770 profile: the exact product record does not state a point-shape descriptor. This page calls it a flexible skiver and makes no round-/square-point claim.
History: 61260/61350 introduction dates, designers, and H2T/K770 code origins are unverified. Hyde's company surfaces also retain the 1870/1875 founding-date tension.
