Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • Stiff Carbon Steel Bristles: Effective for aggressive cleaning and rust removal.
  • Wood Handle: Wood handle
  • Large Size: 4" x 16" brush area covers more surface, making it efficient for larger cleaning jobs.
CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Stainless steel and aluminum.
  • Carbon wire leaves free iron behind; on stainless it defeats the passive layer and causes rust bloom and pitting, and on aluminum it drives galvanic corrosion.
  • This is a ferrous/masonry brush only — for stainless or aluminum, use a dedicated stainless brush (contamination doctrine verified against The Fabricator / AWS D1.6 / finishing.com; Hyde SS alloy unpublished — never claim 304/316).
  • Fine, soft or finished surfaces. A stiff carbon fill scratches glass, plating, anodizing and cured finishes aggressively — the stiffer the brush, the more it marks. When the surface is delicate or the concern is any residue, use brass or nylon.
  • Broad flat production fields and floors. For clearing wide flat areas under body weight, a scrub block (46837) presses far more wire into the surface; for a floor on a pole, the 46840. The 46847 is a hand tool.

How the pros run it

01

Hand behind the face

grip the hardwood handle and push with your hand and forearm in line behind the brush — the plain form has no soft grip or guard, so keep your knuckles clear of the work, because a stiff brush skips off hard spots. Let the stiff tips cut: firm, longish strokes; the stiffness is there to hold the tips into the cut, not to invite you to lean until the wire folds and sets permanently. Read a skip: repeated skipping means the crust needs a scraper first, not more force. Carbon care is mandatory: dry the brush after any damp work and store it dry, or the carbon wire blooms rust and sheds broken filaments; never oil a brush you'll use before painting.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
How is this different from the 46850?
The 46847 is the stiff grade with a wider, shorter 1-1/16" x 5-1/2" face; the 46850 is a 1" x 6-1/2" brush in a 3x19 tuft pattern, not labeled stiff. Stiffer and more aggressive vs longer and more conformable.
Is it really 4" x 16"?
No — that figure in the web description is copy pasted from a different, much larger brush. The correct face is 1-1/16" x 5-1/2".
Can I use it on stainless or aluminum?
No — carbon wire leaves iron that rusts and pits those metals. Use a dedicated stainless brush.
Will it rust?
Yes — carbon steel. Dry it after wet work; never oil it before painting.
Why no soft grip or finger guard?
It's the plain traditional pattern — cheaper and tougher, with your hand directly behind the cut. For a guard and soft grip, the MAXXGRIP 46841 is the modern version.
Will it get steel to bright metal?
It removes loose scale, rust and flaking paint; it doesn't reach white metal.
