Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • High-Density Wire Bristles: More bristles per square inch for maximum cleaning efficiency.
  • Ergonomic Soft-Grip Handle: Ensures comfort and reduces hand fatigue during extended use.
  • Finger Protectors: Built-in safety feature to prevent injuries while working.
CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Stainless and aluminum welds and surfaces.
  • Carbon wire deposits free iron; on stainless it defeats the passive chromium-oxide layer and shows up as rust bloom and pitting on the finished joint, and on aluminum it drives galvanic corrosion.
  • Structural stainless welding practice (AWS D1.6) treats iron contamination as a governing defect, which is why the stainless brush is a separate, dedicated tool (doctrine verified against The Fabricator, the AWS D1.6 forum, and finishing.com; Hyde's stainless alloy is unpublished — never claim 304/316).
  • For those metals, use the 46842.
  • Broad flat fields. For clearing rust or paint off a wide flat plane, a scrub block (46837 carbon) presses more wire into the surface under body weight than a handled brush can. The 46841's edge is lines and profiles, not open acreage.

THE JOB, THE REASON, AND THE BETTER TOOL

How the pros run it

01

Track the face along the line

hold the brush so the 5-1/2" face runs down the weld, seam or edge, and stroke in that direction — the in-line handle exists so you can aim it, so use it to keep the face tracking rather than skittering sideways. Let the tips cut: moderate pressure and longish strokes; the dense .40mm carbon fill works at the tips, and leaning past the cut point folds the wire over, wipes instead of cuts, and sets the fill with a permanent lean. When it skips, the guard saves you — but read it: a brush that keeps skipping off the bead usually means the crust wants a chip hammer or a scraper first, not more force. Carbon care is a ritual: dry the brush after damp work and store it dry, or it blooms rust and sheds broken filaments; and never oil a brush you'll use before welding or painting — oil contaminates both.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
Can I use it on a stainless or aluminum weld?
No — carbon wire contaminates those metals with iron that later rusts and pits. Use the 46842 (stainless), kept dedicated.
Why the guard over the fingers?
Because a scratch brush skips off weld beads and edges constantly; the molded finger protector is there for exactly that moment.
Between-pass brushing — really necessary?
Yes on multi-pass welds: slag and oxide left on a bead become inclusions and porosity in the next pass.
Block or handle — which do I want?
Handle (this) for welds, seams, edges and profiles you stroke along; block (46837) for pressing straight down on broad flat fields.
Will it rust?
Yes — it's carbon steel. Dry it after wet work; never oil it before welding or painting.
How is this different from the wood-handle 46847/46850?
Denser .40mm fill, a finger guard, a soft grip, and a longer 5-1/2" directed face — the modern version of the classic hand scratch brush.
