DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Being shared with carbon-steel work — the fastest way to ruin its whole reason for existing (§2a). One mild-steel pass and it's demoted.
  • Heavy rust and mill scale on cheap mild steel — stainless wire is springier and cuts ferrous scale less aggressively than carbon; that's the 46830's job, and there's no contamination reason to protect plain steel anyway.
  • Soft, plated, or polished surfaces — stainless wire still scratches; brass or nylon fill is the gentle answer.
  • Applying anything — it's a removal tool, the opposite of a paint brush.

How the pros run it

01

A wire brush cuts on the tips, not the sides

Leaning on it folds the wire over, burnishes instead of cuts, and permanently sets the fill — and stainless wire, being tougher and springier, punishes a heavy hand by simply refusing to bite while you push harder. Use moderate pressure and a longer stroke, directional along the feature. If the deposit won't yield at sane pressure, the honest move is a different process (a stainless-specific abrasive flap disc, a pickling paste, blasting with a non-ferrous or stainless-safe media) — never a harder shove and never, ever the nearest carbon brush. Keep the strokes running with the line of a visible stainless part. And mind the finger protectors — stainless brushes skip toward the knuckles exactly like carbon ones.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
Isn't stainless just the rust-proof upgrade?
No — it's a contamination-control tool. Its point is to clean stainless and aluminum without embedding iron in them; rust resistance is a bonus, not the reason (§2a).
Can I use it on regular steel to save buying two brushes?
You can, once — and then it's contaminated and useless for its real job. Buy the carbon 46830 for steel and keep this one clean.
How do I keep it "dedicated"?
Mark the handle and store it apart from carbon brushes. A stainless brush that has touched mild steel is a carbon brush for doctrine purposes.
Does Hyde say what grade of stainless the wire is?
No published grade — do not assume 304 or 316.
Why does it seem to cut mild-steel rust slower than the carbon one?
Because it does; stainless wire is springier and less aggressive on ferrous scale. Use carbon for steel.
