  • Heavy ferrous rust and scale — no contamination reason to protect plain steel, and stainless wire is less aggressive on it; that's carbon-brush work.
  • Soft, plated, or polished surfaces — stainless wire still scratches; brass or nylon fill is the gentle detail answer.

How the pros run it

A wire brush cuts on the tips, and stainless wire

tougher and springier than carbon — punishes a heavy hand by simply skating instead of biting. On a small stainless face that's doubly true: bearing down folds the short wires, burnishes the surface, and sets the fill. Use light-to-moderate pressure and short directed strokes, run them with the visible grain of the part, and let the density cut. If a deposit resists at sane pressure, switch process — a stainless-safe abrasive point, a pickling paste, a stainless-appropriate media — never a harder push and never the nearest carbon brush. Mind the finger protectors on the tight exits.

Why not just use the carbon detail brush and rinse it?
Rinsing doesn't remove embedded iron from either the brush or the part. Cross-contamination is mechanical, not dirt — use the stainless brush and keep it clean.
Stainless or carbon detail brush?
Stainless (this one) for stainless and aluminum; carbon (46832) for steel. Never carbon on stainless, least of all in a corner.
How do I keep it dedicated in a busy shop?
Mark the handle, store it away from carbon brushes, and treat one mild-steel pass as permanent demotion.
What grade is the stainless wire?
Unpublished — do not assume 304 or 316.
It cuts steel rust slowly — is it defective?
No; stainless wire is springier and less aggressive on ferrous scale by design. Use carbon for steel.
