Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • High-Density Wire Bristles: More bristles per square inch for maximum cleaning efficiency.
  • Stainless Steel Bristles: Corrosion-resistant, ideal for tough and wet jobs.
  • Ergonomic Soft-Grip Handle: Ensures comfort and reduces hand fatigue during extended use.
CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Carbon and mild steel.
  • Never run the 46842 on ferrous work, even once.
  • One pass on mild steel loads the stainless fill with carbon particles, and from then on the brush deposits them into the next stainless surface — by fabricator doctrine it's demoted to carbon duty for life (iron-contamination doctrine verified against The Fabricator, the AWS D1.6 forum, and finishing.com; Hyde's stainless alloy is unpublished — never claim 304/316).
  • For mild-steel welds and rust, that's the carbon 46841's job.
  • Broad flat fields. For pressing wire into a wide flat plane under body weight, the stainless scrub block (46838) puts more fill into the surface than a handled brush. The 46842's strength is lines, welds and profiles.

THE JOB, THE REASON, AND THE BETTER TOOL

How the pros run it

01

Track the face along the line

run the 5-1/2" face down the weld or seam and stroke in that direction — the in-line handle is there so you can aim it. Let the tips cut: moderate pressure, long strokes; the dense .40mm stainless fill works at the tips, and over-leaning folds and sets the wire. Dedicate and mark it: this is the maintenance ritual that replaces carbon's dry-and-oil routine — stainless won't bloom rust, but it must be kept out of the carbon-brush pile or it stops being a stainless brush. Passivation follow-up: brushing cleans and can help, but where a job spec calls for chemical passivation of stainless, the brush is the mechanical step, not a substitute for it.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
Why stainless if carbon cuts faster?
Because on stainless and aluminum, carbon wire leaves iron that later rusts and pits the metal. Stainless leaves none — that's the point, not moisture resistance.
Can I use it on regular steel once?
No — one pass on mild steel contaminates the brush permanently and it can't be trusted on stainless again.
Is it 304 or 316?
The alloy isn't published — it's stainless wire, and that's as far as the claim goes.
Does brushing passivate the stainless?
It mechanically cleans the weld; where a spec requires chemical passivation, the brush is the prep step, not a replacement.
Block or handle?
Handle (this) for welds, seams and profiles you stroke along; the stainless block (46838) for pressing down on flat stainless fields.
Why the finger guard?
A scratch brush skips off hard beads and edges — the molded protector is there for that.
