CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • High Carbon Steel Wire: Durable bristles for effective removal of paint, rust, and debris.
  • Sturdy Soft-Grip Handle: Enhances comfort and control during use, even under heavy pressure.
  • Efficient Surface Preparation: The large block design and carbon steel bristles offer fast and effective cleaning.
DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Stainless steel and aluminum.
  • This is the single hard boundary.
  • A carbon-steel brush rubbed on stainless embeds free iron in the surface, which destroys the passive chromium-oxide layer that makes stainless "stainless" — the result shows up weeks later as rust bloom and pitting on metal the customer paid to never rust.
  • On aluminum the same embedded iron sets up galvanic corrosion.
  • Structural stainless welding practice (AWS D1.6) treats iron contamination as a governing defect, which is why fabricators keep dedicated stainless brushes that have never touched carbon steel ⚑(doctrine verified against The Fabricator, the AWS forum, and finishing.com; Hyde's stainless wire alloy is not published — do not claim 304 or 316).

How the pros run it

01

Grip and force

this is a downward-force tool. Hand over the top of the soft-grip handle, weight through the wrist and shoulder into the block, brush face flat to the work. That body mechanic is why the block exists — you cannot get the same pressure from a pistol-grip scratch brush. Let the tips cut: moderate, sustained pressure with longish passes; the dense .40mm fill is doing the work at the tips, and leaning past the point of cut only folds and sets the wire. Read the wire: when the fill takes a permanent lean or the face glazes over, it's near end of life — a set brush wipes rather than cuts. Carbon care is a ritual, and it's non-optional: dry the brush after any damp job and keep it dry in storage; carbon wire stored wet blooms orange and starts shedding broken filaments into your next job. Never oil a brush you'll use before painting — the oil transfers to the surface and kills adhesion.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
Can I use this on stainless or aluminum?
No — carbon wire leaves iron behind that rusts and pits those metals. Use the 46838 (stainless fill), kept separate from any carbon brush.
Does it take a pole?
No. The 46837 is a hand block with no thread. For pole work on floors and high walls, the 46840 is Acme-threaded.
Why is it a block instead of a handle?
So you can put your body weight straight down onto a broad flat face — the job it's built for is "maximum downward force on a flat surface."
Will it get me to bare, bright metal for a warranty coating?
It removes loose scale, rust and flaking paint; it does not reach white metal. Where a spec calls for bright or blasted steel, wire brushing is prep, not the finish.
Will it rust?
Yes if stored wet — it's carbon steel. Dry it after damp work; never oil it before a paint job.
How hard should I push?
Firm enough to cut with the tips, not so hard the wire folds over. If moderate pressure won't cut, scrape the crust first.
