Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • The documented job is “How to Clean Concrete, Brick, and Block Before Coating or Repair — The Complete Guide”.
  • Bristle Material: Made from carbon steel for effective cleaning and surface preparation.
  • Wood Handle: Durable and ergonomically designed for a comfortable grip during extended tasks.
  • Heavy-Duty Cleaning: Carbon steel bristles effectively remove rust, paint, and debris from metal, wood, and other surfaces.
CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Stainless steel and aluminum.
  • Carbon wire deposits free iron — on stainless it destroys the passive layer and causes rust bloom and pitting, on aluminum it drives galvanic corrosion.
  • This is a ferrous/wood/masonry brush; for stainless or aluminum use a dedicated stainless brush (contamination doctrine verified against The Fabricator / AWS D1.6 / finishing.com; Hyde SS alloy unpublished — never claim 304/316).
  • Fine, soft or finished surfaces. Carbon wire scratches glass, plating, anodizing and cured finishes; when the surface is delicate or metal residue matters, use brass or nylon.
  • Heavy-crust removal it can only skate over. A hand brush follows a scraper on genuinely hard, thick crust — brushing first just polishes the top of it.

How the pros run it

01

Push with your hand behind the block

the plain wooden handle puts your hand and forearm directly in line with the face for a straightforward, forceful stroke — keep your knuckles clear, since even a standard-grade brush skips off hard spots. Stroke with the geometry: use the 6-1/2" length — long passes down a member or a file, in line with the work — and on files always brush parallel to the teeth. Let the tips do the cutting: moderate-to-firm pressure; leaning past the cut folds the wire over and sets it permanently. Carbon care is not optional: dry the brush after any damp or outdoor work and store it dry, or the wire blooms rust and starts shedding; never oil a brush you'll use before painting.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
How is this different from the 46847?
The 46850 is the standard grade with a 1" x 6-1/2", 3x19 face — longer and a bit more conformable; the 46847 is the stiff grade with a wider, shorter 1-1/16" x 5-1/2" face.
Can I really clean files with it?
Yes — brush parallel to the teeth to rake out clogging. For hard-packed pinning, a dedicated file card does better, but this handles routine clearing.
Can I use it on stainless or aluminum?
No — carbon wire leaves iron that rusts and pits those metals. Use a dedicated stainless brush.
Can I use it on wood?
Yes — for raking weathered fiber, loose paint and grime; work with the grain at moderate pressure.
Will it rust?
Yes — it's carbon steel. Dry it after wet or outdoor work; never oil it before painting.
What does "3 x 19" mean?
Three rows of nineteen tufts of wire — the fill layout of the classic scratch-brush face.
