Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • Professional-quality seamless plastic grout bag. Molded tip can be cut to the desired opening. Easy to clean. Measures 12"x24".
CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Compaction and profile. The bag fills; it cannot press, densify, or shape. A jointer or trowel follows it on every joint, no exceptions — the division §1 stated and every section obeyed.
  • Float-friendly surfaces. Glazed flat tile grouts faster by float (tile line); using the bag there is slower for no protection gained.
  • Structural fills. Core-filling block, grouting rebar cells, and anchor embedment are specified structural operations with their own materials and methods — not squeeze-bag work.
  • Caulks and sealants. Different chemistry, different tool: cartridge guns exist, and mortar in this bag is not a substitute for either direction.
  • Being the kit. The bag without margin trowel and jointer is a delivery system with nothing to mix its charge or finish its work.

How the pros run it

01

The forearm is the meter

Pressure comes from the squeezing arm's long muscles, steady and boring; the tip hand only steers. When the bead surges and starves, the fault is rhythm, not equipment. Keep the charge live. Re-twist at every pause; mortar sitting in a slack bag is mortar deciding to stiffen. Clear clogs backward. A jam at the tip gets massaged back into the charge and remixed by squeeze — forcing forward compacts the jam. If clogs repeat, the sand is too coarse for the opening; recut or remix (class technique). Batch to the bag's clock. Load what the next half hour uses. Wash it the minute it's empty — Hyde's "easy to clean" is a real property of seamless plastic and it is bought at the tap, promptly: turn the bag out, flush the tip, and let nothing cure in the cone. A bag with yesterday's mortar in its seam-free corners was cleaned tomorrow instead. Respect the recut ratchet. Every recut is permanent and every recut is wider: a bag ages toward bigger joints. Cut conservatively and the same bag serves the whole job ladder.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
What consistency should the mortar be?
Flows under forearm pressure, stands in the joint without slumping — wetter than pointing mortar, stiffer than pourable. Small batches, matched sand-to-opening (authored technique; Hyde prints no mix spec).
How big do I cut the tip?
Under the joint width, then creep up. The cut is permanent and only ever gets bigger — the bag ages toward wider joints.
Sanded mix okay?
Yes, within the opening's tolerance — coarse sand in a small tip is the classic clog. Recut or remix; §3 carries the drill.
Does it replace a grout float?
No — it replaces the float exactly where the float would stain or can't reach: textured faces, deep joints, absorbent surrounds. Glazed flat tile still belongs to the float.
Do the joints still need tooling?
Always. The bag fills and slightly overfills; compression and profile arrive at thumbprint-hard by jointer or trowel. Skipping the tooling pass leaves an uncompressed bead that weathers like one.
How do I keep it from stiffening mid-job?
Half-loads, live twist, and batches sized to a half hour. The bag's clock is the mortar's, and neither negotiates.
Cleanup?
Immediately, inside out, tip flushed — seamless plastic rinses clean if nothing was allowed to cure. "Easy to clean" is a property you exercise, not own.
