✕CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
Slab edges. The confusable pair, settled by material state: this half-round compresses mortar joints in a stiffening wall; the edger's quarter-round (18040) rounds the rim of a fresh concrete slab. If the material came off a mortar board, jointer; if it arrived in a ready-mix truck, edger. They hang near each other and share nothing else.
Raking and removal. A jointer compresses sound new mortar; cutting out failed mortar is the removal tools' trade (other lines), with the silica boundary attached there.
Grapevine, V, beaded, raked profiles. Two half-rounds make concave joints — the profile the BIA ranks best for weather, and the only profile this store will claim for this bar.
Filling. The jointer profiles mortar already in the joint; feeding mortar in is the pointing trowels' and grout bag's work. Repointing needs both tools, in order, and neither substitutes.

The offset grip rides above the bar; fingers wrap the offset, and pressure comes down through the barrel evenly. The offset exists so knuckles never scrape the wall — use the clearance, keep the wrist neutral. Let the runner steer. The upturned sled rides the channel it just made; steering hard with the wrist is how joints wander. Aim the leading end, weight the middle, and walk the wall. Keep the barrel polished. The mirror faces are the tool: mortar dried on the barrel prints drag lines into every joint after. Rinse before set, wipe dry, and the polish maintains itself; store it dry — one-piece high-carbon steel pits under damp alkaline residue like any good blade. Never strike below thumbprint. If paste lifts onto the tool, stop; you are sealing weakness in, not strength. Don't carve. If the barrel is cutting walls into the mortar instead of pressing a curve onto it, the joint is too far gone or the barrel is undersized for the joint — refill or resize, don't force.

Which end do I use?
Match the joint: 3/8" for standard modular brick, 1/2" for block and older wider work — barrel matched or a hair proud, so it bears on mortar and the arrises guide it.
When do I strike?
Thumbprint-hard: a clean print, no paste lifting. Tool in laying order, heads then beds, and let the weather set the pace.
Why concave and not flush or raked?
Compression plus geometry: the tooled concave densifies the surface and sheds water; flush and raked joints leave open texture and ledges — the BIA's ranking, cited above, not a style opinion.
Can it edge my new sidewalk?
No — that is the 18040's job on fresh concrete. Different material state, different curve, different trade; §4 settles the confusable pair.
One tool for brick and block?
That is this bar's argument: the trades' two standard widths on opposite ends of one piece of steel.
What about 5/8" joints?
