How to Grout Stone Veneer, Flagstone, and Brick Floors by Bag
This guide treats the grout bag as a placement method, not as permission to substitute one mortar or grout for another.

Job: place a specified mortar or grout into open joints on stone veneer, rigid-set flagstone, or a mortared brick floor without dragging material across porous or textured faces; then compact, finish, clean, inspect, and cure the joints as the installation system requires.
Difficulty: moderate. The bag is simple; the judgment is not. Success depends on choosing a material that belongs to the complete assembly, keeping movement joints free, filling without hidden voids, and catching the manufacturer-defined tooling and cleaning windows.
The exact tools from this catalog:
It compacts and profiles material already placed; it does not fill.
Everything else — and the omissions matter: the specified material plus its current technical and safety data sheets; the unit and system instructions; measured clean water; clean pail and required mixer; loading support; soft nonmetallic brush; approved cleaning supplies; and protection selected from the SDS and exposure assessment. This line does not sell the joint material, setting bed, drainage, waterproofing, movement-joint system, cleaner, sealer, or structural assembly. A bag cannot make an incompatible system compatible.
Before you start: identify the assembly, not just the surface
The same squeeze motion can serve three very different assemblies. Do not carry a mortar rule from one into another merely because all three have joints.
Adhered stone veneer on a wall. Identify natural versus manufactured stone, the backup and drainage details, the setting mortar, and whether the pattern calls for filled joints. The current CMHA Manufactured Stone Veneer Installation Guide treats veneer as a complete wall system. Its installation checkpoints require appropriate pointing mortar, stable units before joint contact, tooling at thumbprint-hard, and dry soft-bristled cleanup of uncured debris. Follow any stricter veneer-manufacturer direction.
Flagstone. Determine whether it is rigid-set in mortar, flexible-set in sand or aggregate, or installed as tile. Bagging cementitious material belongs only where the chosen rigid or tile system specifies it; it cannot stabilize a moving base or replace movement accommodation.
Brick floor or clay-paver field. Distinguish full-depth pavers in mortar, thin brick installed as tile, and sand-set pavers. BIA paving guidance separates them. A bag can serve a specified rigid mortared field, not a flexible sand-set field; thin brick follows its tile system.
Repointing adds removal depth, old-mortar compatibility, masonry conservation, and silica controls that a new-joint filling guide does not repeat.
Freeze the material decision before opening a bag
Read the current data sheet for the exact material, not a generic “mortar” recipe. Confirm in writing that it is suitable for:
the unit material and exposure;
the wall, paving, or floor assembly;
the actual joint and application method;
interior or exterior service, traffic, moisture, and any freeze-thaw exposure;
the setting material already used; and
the intended profile, cure, cleaning, and—if applicable—sealing system.
Mortar, pointing mortar, joint grout, tile grout, and masonry grout are not interchangeable. Structural masonry grout is not exposed-joint material, and tile grout is not automatically veneer mortar.
This guide deliberately supplies no water ratio, additive, slake time, remix rule, pot life, joint-width range, depth range, temperature band, cure interval, traffic-opening time, or sealer schedule. Those are product- and system-specific facts.
Inspect the installed work before filling it
The bag does not correct loose units, hollow bond, missing drainage, moving cracks, an unstable slab, failed setting material, or bad pitch. Inspect and resolve those failures before hiding their evidence.
On adhered veneer, confirm the units have reached the system’s required stability before joint contact. CMHA specifically warns that a unit moved after initial set begins must be removed, cleaned, and reinstalled; fresh pointing mortar is not a brace. On floors, keep the traffic field closed until the setting system permits joint work.
Map the joints that must remain unfilled
Locate and mark movement or isolation joints, perimeter gaps, weeps, drainage openings, and intentional open joints.
Build a representative mock-up
Use actual units, joint material, tooling, and cleaning. Let the mock-up reach its stated final appearance before approving:
color and aggregate appearance;
whether the bag can fill the joint without clogging or segregating;
whether the face stains from accidental contact;
whether the selected tool produces the specified profile;
whether dry brushing is enough; and
whether any manufacturer-approved cleaner or sealer changes the unit.
A bag reduces face contact; it does not make porous or textured faces immune to paste or cleaning chemistry.
Prepare joints and faces
Joints must be open to the required geometry, sound, and free of material that prevents bond or full filling. Remove loose setting mortar, crumbs, dirt, and standing water without damaging unit edges or the setting bed.
Protect adjacent work; stage walls so drips avoid completed faces and floors toward an exit. Place finishing, cleaning, waste, and instruction resources before mixing.
Mix and load without rewriting the material
Put the exposure controls in place before dry powder moves
Dry cementitious products can expose workers to respirable crystalline silica; wet portland cement can burn skin. Use the SDS and exposure assessment to select engineering controls, respiratory protection, gloves, eye protection, clothing, and washing facilities.
Control dry transfer and do not dry sweep. Close the wrist and forearm exposure path. For skin contact, follow the SDS and OSHA response rather than waiting for pain.
Measure and mix exactly as specified, including any rest and remix. Add no water, admixture, pigment, sand, or old material unless expressly authorized. Record batch identity and start time when required.
If the product requires mechanical mixing, use the specified mixer; the margin trowel then scrapes the pail and loads the bag. Its narrow blade is a handling tool, not permission to scale a hand batch beyond the product’s method.
Perform the material maker’s stated consistency or application check. If the batch will not move through the intended bag setup, stop and diagnose the cause against the data sheet. Do not rescue it by guessing at extra water, additives, aggregate removal, or an arbitrary larger opening.
Prepare and load the bag
Turn the collar back, load with the 18050 without fouling the collar, restore it, and twist the top down as the charge is used. Never point a loaded bag at anyone or force an obstruction toward skin or eyes.
Test flow on the board or mock-up. A batch that surges, bleeds, segregates, or repeatedly blocks is not field-ready; quarantine it under manufacturer instructions.
Fill from the back of the joint forward
Establish the first working area
Keep wall drops off completed work and floor traffic off units not released for access.
Keep the tip within the joint opening and close to the back of the fill zone without scraping or levering against the units. Start pressure before travel so the joint begins full. Move only as fast as material occupies the cavity. The visual objective is a continuous fill that advances outward without bridging over an empty pocket.
Fill wall joints as connected cavities
For stone veneer, slow where a joint opens behind a projecting unit and reduce feed where it pinches. Join beads within the permitted working condition. The tooling pass finishes the exposed zone; it cannot fill a hidden cavity.
If the pattern contains intentional dry-stack areas, drainage gaps, or sealant joints, stop the bead cleanly at their marked boundaries. Wipe no fresh mortar across a porous face. Remove a misplaced deposit only by the veneer and mortar makers’ approved method; on uncured manufactured-stone work, CMHA directs dry, soft-bristled brushing rather than wet brushing that smears mortar.
Fill rigid-set flagstone without annexing the paving design
Follow the approved rigid-setting or tile-system detail. Irregular flagstone joints change width and depth continuously, so judge fill by complete occupancy, not by a fixed travel rate. Feed deep pockets in the sequence authorized by the material maker; do not invent lift dimensions or waiting times. Keep movement joints, drainage paths, and perimeter isolation free.
Fill a mortared brick floor as a rigid paving system
Confirm the preflight identified a mortared system, not sand-set pavers. Keep traffic off unreleased work and the bead between pavers.
Do not bridge movement or control-joint locations with joint mortar. The BIA’s Technical Note 14C treats the setting bed, base, traffic, and movement joints as parts of one paving design; bagging is only the exposed-joint placement step. Thin-brick floors follow their tile-system instructions instead.
Keep one batch visually continuous
Work in sequence, maintaining consistent measurement, mixing, placement, and finish. Stop at a natural break and record it. Never blend expired material into a fresh batch or “freshen” it with guessed water.
Compact and finish: the bag cannot do this part
Wait for the system-defined tooling condition
For filled manufactured-stone veneer joints, CMHA calls for tooling when the pointing mortar is thumbprint-hard. In practical terms, use the test and behavior defined by the current system instructions, not elapsed minutes. Weather, unit absorption, joint mass, and material chemistry move the window. Brick masonry guidance likewise makes tooling a workmanship step, but a tile grout or proprietary paving joint may specify a different finish test. Follow its data sheet.
Too soon smears and pulls; too late marks without compacting. Test the earliest-filled joint in the approved area.
Select the finishing tool by joint and specified profile
Run head joints before long bed joints so the bed pass leaves a continuous horizontal finish. The Brick Industry Association’s water-resistance guidance identifies completely filled and properly tooled exterior mortar joints as part of water-resistant workmanship.
Confirm physical fit and profile; do not rely on store-title dimensions as verified Hyde specifications.
On irregular flagstone or brick flooring, a concave jointer is not automatically correct. The 18050 may assist a flat, specified finish in accessible areas, or the system may require another pointing, slicking, or grout-finishing tool that this line does not sell. Match the approved mock-up and the system specification. Never force a registered Hyde tool into a profile it does not make.
Compact the exposed joint and repair voids honestly
Consolidate the exposed joint to its specified profile without dragging material over faces. If tooling reveals a hole, refill and retool within the permitted condition; never stretch a surface skin across a cavity.
Keep each tool clean enough that hardened residue cannot scratch units or score fresh mortar. Clean the verified steel 18170 before residue hardens and store it dry.
Clean, cure, and inspect
Remove crumbs by the unit maker’s approved method
For manufactured stone veneer, CMHA directs removal of remaining mortar debris with a dry, soft-bristled brush and warns against wet brushing uncured joints. Brush across, not along, a fresh profile so bristles do not excavate it. On brick, BIA Technical Note 20 likewise starts with construction practices that prevent smears and routes cleaning solution and procedure to the brick and cleaner manufacturers.
Do not prescribe acid, detergent, pressure washing, poultice, haze remover, or sealer generically. Natural stone, manufactured stone, clay brick, pigments, and joint materials react differently. Use the gentlest method approved by both the unit and joint-material makers, trialed on the accepted mock-up. Keep any cleaner from drying on the face if its manufacturer forbids that.
Cure and protect exactly as specified
Protect the field from contact, rain, sun, wind, temperature extremes, water, and traffic to the degree and duration stated by the material and assembly instructions. This guide supplies no weather threshold, misting schedule, cover method, freeze rule, or opening time because those decisions change with chemistry and system.
Inspect before releasing the work
Use the accepted mock-up as the visual standard. Inspect at working distance and in raking light:
joints are continuously filled, compacted, and finished to the specified profile;
intersections and changing-width stone joints have no visible holes or bridges;
unit faces are free of mortar smears, scratches, cleaner damage, and changed sheen;
color and texture remain consistent across batch boundaries;
movement joints, weeps, drainage openings, and perimeter gaps remain open and clean;
units remain bonded and unmoved;
no joint is powdering, cracking, slumping, shrinking away from an edge, or remaining soft beyond the material’s stated progression; and
floor work is not opened to traffic before the system release condition.
Record the product and lot, batch sequence, weather, mock-up approval, cleaning method, and release time when the project requires quality-control documentation.
What goes wrong — and the bounded fix
The bag will not flow. Check batch, mixing, elapsed condition, material, and approved outlet against the data sheet and mock-up. Do not add guessed water or force a blockage.
A larger opening does not cure segregation.
The face has smears or haze. Stop spreading damage. Use only the unit and material makers’ approved recovery, proved on the mock-up—not automatic acid.
The joint looks full but collapses under the tool. A bridge formed over a void or the tooling condition is wrong. Open and refill while correction remains permitted. Tooling cannot compact a cavity it cannot reach.
The jointer cuts a narrow groove or flattens the joint. The working surface does not match the joint or the specified profile. Change to the correctly fitted, verified tool.
Fresh veneer units move. Work began too soon. Follow the veneer system’s removal/reset direction; do not brace with pointing mortar.
A floor cracks in recurring lines. Suspect movement accommodation or base movement. Stop cosmetic refilling and review the assembly.
Joints vary in color. Audit measurement, water, mixing, cleaning, cure exposure, and stops; wait for stated final appearance before correction.
The wrong material is installed. Do not overcoat it. Obtain written removal/replacement direction; removal can damage units and create silica exposure.
Cleanup and storage
Empty material only into the waste stream the product SDS and local rules permit; do not wash cementitious slurry into drains, soil, or stormwater. Clean the 18400 promptly by the material maker’s approved method before residue cures.
Scrape the pail and loading tools while the material is removable. Clean and dry the 18050 and verified steel 18170 before storage.
Product fit — why all four registered models are here

History note
The grout bag uses the pastry bag’s pressure-and-cone logic, but neither Hyde’s catalog nor the current official product page supplies an inventor, adoption date, or masonry-origin story. What is sourced is the present tool: Hyde’s official page identifies a seamless plastic bag with a cuttable molded tip, and the current masonry literature treats bag placement as one method inside larger veneer and paving systems—not as the system itself.
Is this mortar or grout?
The assembly decides: veneer pointing mortar, rigid-paver joint material, and tile grout are different specifications. Structural masonry grout is not the generic answer.
How much water, and how long is the batch usable?
Only the current data sheet answers. No guessed retempering.
How large should I cut the tip?
Always use a concave jointer?
The system controls. 18170 makes concave joints where it fits; 18182 is gated; other profiles need other tools.
Seal before grouting?
Bag sand-set pavers?
No—not to turn a flexible pavement rigid. Follow its specified joint system.
Clean haze with muriatic acid?
No generic acid rule. Follow the unit and cleaner makers; stone and veneer may be stricter.
Can the bag replace tooling?
No. 18400 delivers; a fitted tool compacts and profiles.
18182 zero-claims gate: no accepted catalog row or live Hyde page for the exact SKU.
18050 naming: “MAXXGRIP PRO®” appears in the store title, but Hyde defines no PRO tier or feature difference.
