Job: install manufactured stone veneer units on a released, system-compliant receiving surface, or reset a small number of detached or damaged units after the failure and concealed assembly have been assessed and an approved repair method has been obtained.

Time: system- and condition-dependent.

Difficulty: skilled finish work behind an envelope gate. Buttering and pressing a unit are learnable. Deciding whether the wall is ready—and whether a loose stone is an isolated repair or evidence of a failed water-management, lath, bond, movement, or structural condition—is the consequential part.

Width—not an invented grade—is the choice against 18050.

Its accepted distinction from 18100 is length and the resulting access-versus-capacity call.

It does not select mortar, compact a joint, make a profile, or cure the work.

Everything else — required where the system calls for it, and not supplied by this union: approved project documents and inspections; the exact veneer and mortar manufacturers’ current instructions, technical data sheets (TDS), labels, and safety data sheets (SDS); released backup, water-resistive barrier (WRB), flashing, drainage, lath, fasteners, scratch coat, movement accommodation, and sealant transitions; layout, cutting, dust-control, mixing, access, jointing, brushing, protection, washout, and hazard-assessment-selected PPE systems. Five hand tools do not approve the wall.

The active national practice is ASTM C1780-26, updated February 2026. It complements rather than replaces manufacturer instructions, code, and contract documents, and does not cover every flashing or moisture-management requirement.

Use this order:

exact veneer system’s current installation and repair instructions, approvals, and limitations;

exact scratch-, setting-, and pointing-mortar TDS, label, and SDS;

active referenced standards, including ASTM C1780-26 where applicable;

Do not splice details from different systems. Separately valid components do not become an approved assembly by accumulation.

Admit new work—or diagnose the repair

New installation

Read back the exact backup and exposure: framed wall, concrete, concrete masonry, interior substrate, exterior transition, column, landscape feature, or another approved condition.

Stop if the receiving surface is dirty, painted, oily, waterproofed in an unapproved way, smooth where a bondable texture is required, wet beyond the system limit, cracked or moving, out of tolerance, or not formally released. Do not add lath, grind a surface, omit a WRB layer, change fasteners, bridge flashing, close drainage, or “make up” a low with mortar from this guide.

Map the symptom before removing anything:

One unit detached after impact, with sound surrounding work and a known compatible reset detail: potentially an admitted local repair.

Several loose units, hollow areas spreading beyond one unit, recurring cracks, bulging, rust staining, exposed or corroded lath, soft sheathing, decayed framing, torn WRB, missing flashing, chronic wetting, efflorescence tied to leakage, failed sealant transitions, or movement at openings: system investigation, not a reset.

Photograph the face, joint pattern, transitions, and failure before disturbance. Record the veneer identity, lot or color where known, age, substrate, exposure, prior repairs, water history, and exact area sounding loose. A replacement that stays bonded while water continues behind it is not a successful repair.

If removal exposes an assembly different from the approved detail, keep it open and escalate. Do not bury the discrepancy under a new unit.

Freeze material, weather, layout, and safety decisions

Bind the exact current instructions before opening mortar. Record which product performs each role and copy its authorized substrate condition, preparation, mixing method, water or liquid quantity, allowed additions, rest/remix rule, application thickness or coverage method, working time, discard condition, weather limits, cure/protection, cleaning, and compatibility.

Lay out units dry from multiple boxes or approved lots as the veneer maker directs. Establish the pattern, corners, terminations, openings, penetrations, and intentional joint treatment before setting. Preserve required clearances, drainage openings, flashing exits, movement joints, and sealant spaces. Do not cut a closure until its location and orientation are approved. Confirm that replacement units match the existing profile, color range, and weathered appearance closely enough for the project; a technically bonded but visually foreign repair may still fail acceptance.

Build a representative mock-up with the real substrate condition, unit, mortar, joint method, profile tool, and cleaning method. A mock-up does not waive code or manufacturer requirements.

Safety is task-specific:

Dry transfer, cutting, grinding, drilling, and removal can release respirable crystalline silica.

Wet hydraulic cement can injure skin and eyes.

Access, overhead work, lifting, cutting, electrical proximity, falling objects, and occupied-area protection need their own site controls. This guide invents none.

Prepare the receiving surface without freelancing

For new work, inspect the completed WRB, flashing, lath, fasteners, scratch coat, direct-bond surface, openings, penetrations, and transitions against the released assembly before they are concealed. CMHA’s checkpoints make the core point: substrate condition changes the approved preparation, and concrete or concrete masonry must be clean and bondable before direct application. The exact current project instructions decide whether preparation means cleaning, a scratch coat, lath, another accepted treatment, or rejection.

For a local repair, remove the failed unit and old setting material only by the approved method. Protect adjacent units and their edges. The five Hyde tools are placement tools; do not use the pointing trowels as chisels or the margin trowels as pry bars. Power or abrasive removal invokes the dust-control plan. Preserve and inspect the substrate and water-management layers.

Clean the accepted cavity and replacement unit exactly as their manufacturers permit. Do not assume a salvaged unit may be reused, that every back should be soaked or dampened, that every substrate should be primed, or that a bonding agent belongs in the repair. Obtain written system direction for each.

Mix and stage only a controllable approved batch

Use the specified mixer where required. The margin trowels may hand-mix only when the exact mortar instructions permit the batch size and method. The 18050 tracks a tight wall-to-bottom pail corner and handles narrow repair quantities; the 18060 turns a larger permitted hand batch and moves more material per pass. Both scrape dry pockets from corners, transfer mortar, load the pointing trowels, and clean the container while material remains removable.

Measure; do not estimate. Follow the specified sequence, mixing time, rest, remix, and additions. Do not retemper, add pigment, alter aggregate, or “loosen it for the bag” unless the current TDS expressly authorizes the change. Quarantine material outside its stated condition.

Stage only the wall area that can be set, jointed, cleaned, and protected within the documented windows. Keep unit backs and mortar free of dust, soil, dried crumbs, and cross-contamination.

Set new units at the tool’s honest grain

Follow the system’s unit-preparation and mortar-placement method. Where it calls for back-buttering, use the pointing trowel’s face to press approved setting mortar across the unit back to the required coverage and thickness; where it calls for mortar on the receiving surface or a combination method, follow that sequence instead.

Choose by access:

Use the 18110 for open fields and larger unit backs where its 7-inch blade reduces reloads and has room to sweep.

Use the 18100 for small units, returns, inside corners, close work around trim or adjacent stones, and precise cleanup at a unit edge.

Use the 18060 to feed the larger blade and manage broader mortar margins.

Use the 18050 where the pail, opening, or repair pocket rewards the narrower rectangle.

Bring the unit to its marked location without contaminating the face. Press and work it into the approved setting bed with the motion and pressure the veneer system specifies, while maintaining pattern, plane, joint treatment, and required open boundaries.

Do not tap with a steel blade edge, pry an adjacent unit into pattern, or smear the face clean with wet mortar. If a unit is moved after initial set begins, CMHA’s checkpoint calls for removing it, cleaning mortar from the unit and receiving surface, and reinstalling by the approved process—not pushing it back into place.

Continue in controlled areas, checking pattern distribution, level or reference lines where the design uses them, corners, terminations, clearances, and joint continuity. Stop before a closure, penetration, or flashing conflict becomes concealed.

Reset an admitted local repair

Dry-fit the replacement without setting mortar. Confirm that it seats without forcing, preserves surrounding joints and plane, and does not bridge an intentional gap. If the replacement rocks because old mortar, damaged backup, or an unrecognized obstruction remains, do not grind the unit or deepen the cavity by instinct.

Prepare, mix, and apply the approved repair setting system. The 18100 is the control choice for a small or confined reset; the 18110 carries more material across a broad unit back. Seat by the current repair instruction and compare immediately with neighboring face projection, joint space, and pattern. Remove only permissible squeeze-out while workable, using the small pointing blade for controlled edge cleanup without wiping cement paste across the veneer face.

Mortar in the face joint is not a brace. If the unit will not remain stable, stop and diagnose substrate, material, fit, and support rather than adding a richer bed.

Fill and finish the joints without confusing delivery with tooling

First determine whether the approved pattern is tight-fit/dry-stack, filled, overgrouted, raked, concave, V-grooved, flush, or another manufacturer-defined treatment. Do not fill intentional open joints, movement joints, sealant spaces, weeps, flashing exits, or drainage paths.

For accessible filled joints, the 18100 presses small loads into narrow and confined areas; the 18110 handles broader open runs and larger loads. Fill from the back of the exposed joint outward without stretching a skin over a void. The pointing trowels place and dress; neither proves the required final profile.

Use the 18400 grout bag where the approved material and mock-up permit bag placement, especially when a loaded blade would contact textured faces or the joint geometry makes controlled delivery preferable. Keep the tip in the joint and feed continuously enough to avoid bridges. Do not add water to cure a clog or force a blockage toward a person.

The bag only delivers. At the system-defined working state—CMHA uses “thumbprint-hard” for pointing mortar—compact and finish with the profile-matched tool and method named by the veneer system. That tool may be outside this exact Hyde union. Do not turn a pointing trowel into an undocumented concave or V jointer merely to keep the purchase graph closed.

Clean, cure, inspect, and hand off

Prevent face contamination rather than planning an aggressive cleanup. CMHA’s manufactured-stone checkpoint directs installers to remove uncured mortar debris with a dry, soft-bristled brush and specifically warns against wet brushing uncured mortar joints because it smears mortar. Follow any stricter veneer-manufacturer rule.

Protect and cure by the current veneer and mortar instructions. Weather limits, covers, added moisture, heaters, freeze protection, cure duration, sealant timing, coating or sealing, and return to contact are system decisions. Plastic pressed against a face, improvised misting, or early enclosure can be as wrong as no protection; this guide supplies no universal remedy.

Inspect before release:

units remain aligned, stable, and fully accepted by the specified bond/inspection method;

joints are continuously filled where required, compacted, and finished to the approved profile;

tight-fit areas and every movement, sealant, flashing, weep, drainage, and clearance boundary remain open as designed;

faces show no mortar smear, cleaner damage, scratches, color change, or unintended sheen;

corners, openings, penetrations, terminations, and grade/paving transitions match the approved detail;

no unit has moved, cracked, sounded newly hollow, or opened at an edge;

no dampness, corrosion stain, bulge, recurring crack, or spreading failure remains unexplained; and

protection and future inspection ownership are recorded.

Clean the five Hyde tools before mortar hardens, using the material instructions and contained washout. Keep cementitious water and residue out of unapproved drains, soil, and stormwater. Dry the carbon-steel trowels before storage.

What goes wrong — and the controlled fix

A unit slides, rotates, or springs back. Stop. Do not wedge it with pointing mortar. Check bed condition, unit preparation, substrate, material state, support, and system method. If initial set has begun, remove and reinstall under the approved process.

A reset unit releases again. Treat it as diagnosis failure: incompatible repair material, incomplete old-mortar removal, contaminated or damaged substrate, water entry, movement, or concealed assembly failure. Reopen and investigate; do not apply a second face-level reset.

Several surrounding units sound hollow or move. The job has left the local-repair lane. Secure the area and route a system assessment.

Mortar does not transfer or shows incomplete contact at an inspected edge. Remove the fresh unit while correction is allowed and resolve preparation, material, coverage method, and timing. Do not face-point a bond defect.

Mortar smears the face. Stop spreading it. Follow the exact veneer maker’s uncured-mortar recovery; the CMHA default is dry soft-bristled brushing, not wet wiping.

The bag clogs, surges, bleeds, or separates. Stop. Audit material, batch, working state, outlet, loading, and approved bag compatibility. Do not add guessed water.

The finished joint caves in or reveals holes. Delivery bridged a void or tooling began at the wrong state. Reopen, refill, and finish only while the material instructions allow correction.

Cracks return through the same locations. Stop cosmetic repair. Movement, substrate, control-joint, or water-management investigation is required.

Rust, torn WRB, wet sheathing, or corroded lath appears. Preserve the opening and escalate. The five-tool union cannot repair or approve the concealed assembly.

Color or texture differs after cure. Compare batch records, lot blending, water measurement, cleaning, weather, cure, and mock-up. Do not stain, acid-wash, coat, or seal without written compatibility and approval.

Product fit and FAQ

The 18050 earns the tight pail and confined repair. The 18060 earns faster transfer and broader mortar handling. The 18100 is the small-unit and tight-control point; the 18110 is the open-field and capacity point. The 18400 is contact-limiting joint delivery only. Rectangle handles; point places; bag delivers. None designs or approves the wall.

Can I install manufactured stone directly over this wall? Only if the adopted code, project documents, and exact veneer system admit the identified substrate and preparation.

Which mortar Type should I use? Use the exact currently approved scratch, setting, and pointing materials.

How thick should the setting bed be, and how much coverage is enough? Use the current approved system values and evidence method.

Do I dampen the unit or wall first? Only where the current instructions require it for the exact unit, substrate, and material. Do not universalize a preparation step.

Can I reset one fallen stone? Only after the failure is admitted as local and the substrate/water-management condition is accepted. Otherwise investigate the assembly.

Should I use 18100 or 18110? 18100 for tight access and fine control; 18110 for more capacity where its longer blade has room. No other performance hierarchy is established.

Trowel or bag for the joints? Trowel for accessible placement where face contact can be controlled; 18400 for approved contact-limiting delivery on textured faces or suitable joint geometry. Both still require the system’s separate compaction/profile method.

Can I use a wet sponge to clean manufactured stone? Not as a generic rule. CMHA warns against wet brushing uncured mortar; use the exact veneer maker’s approved method and the mock-up.

What weather, cure, or protection schedule applies? The current manufacturer, mortar TDS, specification, and site plan. This guide intentionally supplies none.

History note

Manufactured stone veneer is concrete formed to resemble natural stone, but its useful history is the evolution from decorative unit to documented wall system. ASTM C1780-26 expressly defers to manufacturer instructions, code, and contract documents: the visible stone is only the last layer. Hyde’s five tools serve the mortar work without claiming the assembly behind it.

ASTM C1780-26 does not cover every envelope detail.

Wet hand-setting is not silently equated with dry cutting or grinding.
