Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Cutting in walls and ceilings. A wall-to-ceiling or wall-to-trim cut line is a 1-1/2"–2-1/2" angular sash brush's job (Hyde Millenium 47370-series, Richard's B5 sash family). At 5/8" this brush is deliberately too narrow for that run — it would take forever and wander.
  • Oil, alkyd, or varnish. SRT is a synthetic filament for waterborne coatings. For oil-based paint, varnish, or oil stain, natural white or black bristle is the correct fill (Hyde Extra 47380-series, Richard's bristle brushes) — synthetics can be used in oil but natural bristle lays those coatings better.
  • Broad faces. Loading a wide trim face, a door panel field, or a shutter face with a 5/8" brush is slow and lap-prone — step up in width (§5).
  • Elements below about 1/2" of line. For nail-head spotting, scratch repair, and hairline detail, an artist brush (80011-80017) is the right tool; the trim brush's job starts where the artist brush's ends.

How the pros run it

01

Load a third of the bristle, never to the heel

Dip only the tip third to half of the filament, and never sink the brush to the ferrule — paint driven into the heel dries there, splays the bristle permanently, and ends the brush. Tap, don't wipe. Tap each side against the inside of the can to shed the excess; wiping across the rim strips the reservoir the large-capacity filament is meant to carry. Set the thin edge to the line and draw. Present the tapered chisel edge to the sightline, start slightly off the exact end, then come back into the corner and draw along the line in one smooth pass, letting the loaded tips gutter paint to the edge. Keep a wet edge in fast waterborne paint — work a manageable length so you are always joining wet to wet. Clean at the heel first. A trim brush is ruined at the heel, not the tip: rinse waterborne paint out under warm water, work the paint out of the base of the fill where it meets the ferrule, comb the filaments back parallel, spin or shake dry, and store hanging or flat in its keeper so the tapered edge stays true.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
What is SRT?
Solid Round Tapered filament — solid, round, tapered to the tip like natural bristle; it carries a large reservoir and lays off smooth, which is what modern fast-drying latex needs.
Why 5/8"?
It is the narrowest Elegance trim brush — for divided-light muntins, thin grilles, and slivers a wider brush overshoots.
Elegance or the 13515?
Same size and job; Elegance is the SRT finish upgrade, the 13515 the standard tier. Buy up when the trim shows.
Can I use it in oil or varnish?
It is built for waterborne paint; use natural bristle for oil, alkyd, and varnish.
How do I keep the fine edge?
Never load to the heel, clean at the heel first, comb the filaments parallel, and store in the keeper so the taper holds.
