Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Cutting in a room. A wall-to-ceiling or wall-to-trim cut line wants a 1-1/2"–2-1/2" angular sash brush (Hyde Millenium 47370-series, Richard B5 sash family). At 1" this brush is the bridge into that range, not a substitute for a sash brush on a full room.
  • Oil, alkyd, and varnish. SRT is a waterborne filament; natural white or black bristle lays oil paint, varnish, and oil stain better (Hyde Extra 47380-series, Richard bristle brushes).
  • Flat fields. A flush door field, a wall, or a broad flat surface is a flat brush's or roller's job; the trim brush is for edges and members.
  • Fine muntins and slivers. Divided-light bars and narrow grilles a 1" brush overshoots belong to the 5/8" (13415) or 3/4" (13418).

How the pros run it

01

Load the tip third, keep the heel clean

Dip a third to half of the bristle and never to the ferrule; heel-dried paint splays a brush for good. Tap off, don't wipe. Tapping each face inside the can preserves the large SRT reservoir; wiping the rim throws it away. Present the chisel edge, pull one pass. Set the thin tapered edge to the sightline, start short of the end, return into the corner, and draw the line in a single stroke as the tips gutter paint to the edge — single-pass discipline matters most on the widest brush, since a doubled stroke on a full inch of face shows in raking light. Keep a wet edge in fast waterborne paint. Save the brush at the heel: rinse under warm water, clear the base of the fill first, comb the filaments parallel, spin or shake dry, and store in the keeper so the taper and the square inch of edge hold true.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
What is SRT?
Solid Round Tapered synthetic filament — large capacity and smooth lay-off, built for fast-drying waterborne paint.
Why 1"?
It faces the widest trim — door edges, wide casing, baseboard cap — in a single pass, and bridges into narrow sash work; it is the top of the trim range.
13425 or 13525?
Same size and job; Elegance is the SRT finish upgrade, the 13525 the standard tier. Buy up when the trim shows.
Can I cut in walls with it?
Only the narrowest cut lines; step up to an angular sash brush for a full room.
Oil or varnish?
Use natural bristle; SRT is for waterborne paint.
