Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • Bristle Material: Soft, flexible synthetic bristles (historically called white bristles).
  • Handle: Beavertail handle for improved grip and control.
  • Coating Compatibility: Ideal for use with oil-based paints and stains.
DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Water-based paint.
  • Hyde rates the Extra for oil-based paints and stains, and if the fill is true natural white bristle it will go limp and flared in latex — a ruined day and, often, a ruined brush.
  • For a 1-inch latex/acrylic job, reach for a flagged-polyester or poly-nylon brush instead.
  • It is also not a cutting-in sash brush: it is a straight flat, not an angular, so for a crisp ceiling or frame line you want an angled sash, not this square-tipped flat.
  • And it is not a coverage brush — at 1 inch, painting a door or a wall field with it is a punishment; step up in width.

How the pros run it

01

Loading

dip to one-third of the bristle, tap (don't scrape) the excess, and paint off the loaded side. A soft brush over-loaded floods the profile. Laying off: the last pass is always light and one-directional, tips only, to level the film — the soft Extra rewards a delicate tip-off. Grip: pencil grip on the beavertail for control on narrow work; the beavertail's palm swell fights fatigue on long finishing sessions. Cleaning (the part that decides whether this is a one-season or ten-year brush): for oil-based finish, clean in the correct solvent (mineral spirits for most oil/alkyd enamels and oil stains, the maker's thinner for varnish/poly), work the solvent up into the heel where bristle meets ferrule, then wash, comb the fill straight, spin or shake dry, and hang. A brush dies at the heel, not the tip: finish left to cure where the bristles enter the ferrule splays the brush permanently.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
Is this a natural-bristle or synthetic brush?
Hyde's catalog says "white bristles" and its website says "synthetic bristles (historically called white bristles)" — the sources disagree, so treat the fill as unresolved ; buy it for the coating Hyde names it for (oil).
Can I use it in latex?
Not recommended — it's the oil-side brush; use the 47531 flagged-polyester flat for water-based work.
Why only 1 inch — can it paint a door?
It can, badly; the 1" is the detail width. Use the 3" (47382) or 4" (47383) Extra for door and panel faces.
Varnish keeps showing brush marks — wrong brush?
Usually technique: load lighter and finish with a single light tip-off pass; the soft Extra is built to level, but only if you stop brushing.
