Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • The documented job is “How to Strip Paint from Window Muntins, Sash, and Channels — The Complete Step-by-Step Guide”.
DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Broad fields — 7/8" across a wall or clapboard face is the slowest possible way to do a coverage job; those want the 2" 10610, the 2-1/2" 10620, or the steel heads.
  • It is not a filing tool — anyone who buys the 11200 file to sharpen this carbide blade has bought a tool that physically cannot do the job.
  • It is not a pry or a struck tool; brittleness is the tax on the edge.
  • It is not a profile tool: the concave hollows of coves and moldings want the shaped blades of a contour scraper (10450/10460), not a flat triangular carbide corner.
  • And it is not the automatic detail choice for casual work — the steel 10500 is cheaper to own and files back on the job.

How the pros run it

01

Pull toward you at a steep angle, pressure directly over the edge

the family stroke, owned by the scrapers line doc. Carbide adjusts the inputs: let the hardness do the work, and answer slowed cutting with a corner rotation or a substrate check, never with more downforce — carbide under excess pressure doesn't bite deeper, it finds something to chip on. Keep the pull straight so you don't corner-load a corner sideways in a channel. Respect the 7/8" width: it concentrates force beautifully in tight lanes and bridges nothing wider. And the boundary rides with every paint scraper here: hard, old, multi-coat coatings are pre-1978 territory, so assume lead, work wet and contained, and treat paid disturbance as RRP-governed, certified-firm work per the scrapers line doc (EPA — Lead RRP Program).

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
Why a triangle?
Detail scraping kills corners, not edges — three corners give two free renewals by rotation before any replacement, and the point reaches channel ends and junctions.
Can I sharpen it?
Not with a file — carbide is harder than a mill file's teeth, and the 11200 file (scoped to carbon steel) cannot cut it. A diamond hone physically can, but Hyde publishes no procedure ; the supported answer is rotate the corner, then replace.
What blade fits it?
The 7/8" triangular carbide blade, restocked as the 11160 in the scrapers line. The rectangular carbide blades (11170-family) are for the 2" 10610 and don't fit here .
Steel 10500 or carbide 10600 for muntins?
Steel for a homeowner's pace and cost; carbide for a long day of it or hard old coatings — carbide holds across the job but never files and chips if abused.
Lead paint?
Hard old coatings are pre-1978 territory — work under the RRP boundary (section 3).
What kills this blade?
Impact and leverage almost exclusively — a nail head or a pry chips carbide permanently, and a chip tracks a scratch into the work. Retire a chipped corner on sight.
