How the pros run it

Cross the scratch
change stroke direction between passes so 150 cuts the previous grit's lines instead of deepening its own. Weight, not force: the tool's mass is the pressure; a skim coat is thin and 150 will reach the paper if you push. Raking light is the instrument: 150 is the grit at which "flat" is decided, and flat is only visible in a low, raking light. The skip you may make and the one you may not: you may start at 150 and skip 120 on clean taping; you may not go from 120 to 240 without 150 (or 180) bridging — the fine grit polishes the coarse scratch's tops and leaves its valleys for the primer to find. Wash before it stops cutting, not after.

Is 150 my only grit?
Often, yes — on clean taping or a good skim destined for flat or eggshell paint, a 150 pass straight to primer is a complete job. Add 120 before it only if there are ridges to knock down, and 180 after it only if the paint is a sheen.
Why does my skim keep cutting through to the paper?
Too much pressure at a thin high spot. Let the tool's weight do the cutting and work the whole plane evenly.
Can I skip from 120 to 240 and save a grit?
No — 150 (or 180) has to bridge, or the 120 scratch survives under the polish and shows through primer.
Do they wash out like the coarser sheets?
Yes — rinse and reuse; the net is rated 3× the life of sandpaper, and the long working pass is where that pays.
Which sander?
Hyde dust-free hand and pole sanders (09160/09165/09170/09180) via EasyClamp, and conventional clamp hand sanders. Sheet is 3-5/16" × 11-1/4" vs the 3-1/4" × 9-3/8" conventional-sander spec — verify exact fit on the tool (line-doc 6).
