  • Any compound-leveling job — knockdown, skim, pre-prime — all of which are 120/150/180 work; 240 on raw mud is the classic misuse, polishing without leveling.
  • Removing a defect of any size — a nib is the largest thing 240 should meet; ridges, patches, and buildup belong far down the ladder.
  • Contoured trim the flat sheet cannot follow — the 5" sponge disc (there is no 240 in the 5" line, which is itself the tell that between-coat film polishing is a flat-wall, net-only job).
  • And field-scale power sanding — the 9" net disc (09922) is the powered 240 for open primed field; this sheet is the hand-and-pole tool.

Lightest pressure on the line

you are leveling a film, not cutting a solid — let the sheet skim, and the nibs shear off while the film survives. Feel, then look: a bare hand finds nibs a raking light can miss; sweep the surface, mark the drags, take them down. Never on raw compound: 240 on unpainted mud polishes the tops of the underlying scratches without leveling anything — it is a film grit, and used on compound it wastes the pass and hides an unlevel surface under a shine. Wash early: on paint film the net loads faster, so rinse at the first sign the cut has slowed rather than pressing (pressing glazes the film). Respect the sequence: 240 only ever follows a properly leveled and primed surface; it cannot fix flatness, only polish it.

Can I use 240 to final-sand my drywall before primer?
No — that is 180's job on bare compound. 240 on raw mud polishes the surface without leveling it and hides flaws under a shine. 240 is for after the primer.
Why is there no 120 or 150 in this pack — and no 240 in the 5" line?
Because 240 is a paint-film grit: it belongs to flat-wall film work (between coats, Level 5), which the net does and the conventional/5" formats do not.
Why does only the net go to 240?
Paint film loads a fine grit almost instantly; conventional 240 paper glazes in seconds. The open weave is what keeps a 240 cutting on film.
How hard should I press?
Barely — it is the lightest pass in the sequence. You are shearing nibs off a thin film, not sanding the coat.
Which sander?
Hyde dust-free hand/pole sanders (09160/09165/09170/09180) via EasyClamp; on a vacuum for both the anti-loading and the readable-surface benefit. Sheet 3-5/16" × 11-1/4" vs 3-1/4" × 9-3/8" conventional spec — verify on the tool (line-doc 6).
