How the pros run it

Grip and load

Relaxed full grip on the soft-grip handle; band a thin, even load across the front third of the blade off a 6" knife. Angle. Low to lay the skim on, steep and firm to wipe it down and feather off. Meter the bow — you have plenty. At twelve inches on a flat back the blade flexes a long way for a small change in pressure: ease the edges and the finish feathers to zero, press the center and you leave a crown. That is the flat back's purpose; the light touch that feathers effortlessly is the same touch that dishes if you over-drive it. Don't trust it as a straightedge. If you need to gauge flat, use a stiffer edge. Keep it clean and dry. A finish blade prints every nick — wipe both faces each stroke, retire a dinged edge, and dry the blue steel at day's end.

How is this different from the 09243?
Only the back. The 09273 is flat-backed and limber — it feathers the finish coat to zero easily; the 09243 is extruded and stiff — it holds a flat pass and reads a truer straightedge. Same 12" blue-steel blade.
What's the flat back best at here?
The last feathered pass — dying the finish coat's edges to nothing with a light hand, which is what a limber 12" wants to do.
Can I check joints for flat with it?
Poorly — a limber blade bows and reads untrue. Use the stiff 09243 or a straightedge for gauging.
Will it rust?
Wet, yes — blue steel. Wipe dry. The maintenance-free version at this width and back is the stainless 09373.
Is there a wider one?
The 14" 09244 for the widest butt joints and full level-5 skim — and it's the only 14" the blue run builds (extruded back).
