Grip and load

Relaxed full grip on the soft-grip handle — comfort matters most here, where each loaded pass is long and heavy and a level-5 day is thousands of them; band a thin, even film across the front third of the blade off a 6" knife. Angle. Low to lay the skim on, steep and firm to wipe it down. Steer entirely by bow. This is the blade where bow is the whole technique: center pressure for a held crown, eased ends for a feathered edge, and no attempt to force it flat. Two overlapping passes on butt joints. Build and feather each wing wide; expect to come back and widen again if the raking light finds a crown. Don't gauge with it. Use a stiffer edge to check flat. Keep it clean and dry. A long finish blade prints a nick across a lot of wall — wipe both faces each stroke, retire a dinged edge, and dry the blue steel at day's end without fail.

Why would I need 14 inches?
For butt joints and level-5 skim — the two jobs that feather wider than a foot. If your work is tapered seams, a 12" finishes them; the 14" is for the hump you can't hide and the wall you skin whole.
Isn't the extruded back stiff? Why call it limber?
At fourteen inches width wins — it's the limberest blade in the line even extruded, and the extruded spine just gives it more backbone than a flat 14" would. You steer it by bow, not by force.
Is there a flat-backed or stainless 14" here?
No flat-backed blue — this extruded 09244 is the only 14" blue. The only 14" stainless is the flat-backed 09374. There's no same-back steel swap at this width.
Can I check joints for flat with it?
No — it's too limber and reads untrue. Gauge with the stiff 12" 09243.
Will it rust?
Wet, yes — blue steel, and a lot of edge to lose. Wipe it dry. The stainless 14" is the flat-backed 09374.
