Grip and load

Relaxed full grip on the soft-grip handle; band mud across the front third of the blade off a 6" knife. Angle. Low to lay on, steep and firm to feather off. Meter the bow — there's a lot of it. At ten inches on a flat back, small pressure changes swing the blade's crown a long way: ease one end and it feathers to nothing, press the center and it leaves a crown. That sensitivity is the flat back's purpose; learn the touch and you feather wide with little effort, over-drive it and you dish. Watch the span. A 10" edge prints a nick or a crumb across a lot of wall — wipe both faces on the pan rim constantly and retire a dinged blade. Dry it. Blue steel goes home dry; the rag is the tax on the feel.

How is this different from the 09233?
Only the back. The 09263 is flat-backed and limber — it feathers a wide first skim easily; the 09233 is extruded and stiff — it holds a heavy fill flat. Same 10" blue-steel blade.
What's the flat back best at here?
The first skim — feathering the fill's edges out wide with a light hand, which is exactly what a limber 10" wants to do.
Can it lay the final coat?
On narrower fields, yes; on a full seam the last wide feather is a 12–14" job.
Will it rust?
Wet, yes — blue steel. Wipe dry. The maintenance-free version at this width and back is the stainless 09363.
Is it the "second knife" I should buy first?
Ten inches is the width most finishers add after a narrow knife — a reasonable first taping knife. If you want it stiff for heavy fills, that's the 09233; light and cheap, the Value 09213.
