Grip and load

Relaxed full grip on the soft-grip handle; band a thin, even load across the front third of the blade off a 6" knife — the finish coat is thin by definition. Angle. Low to lay the skim on, steep (45°+) and firm to wipe it down tight. Steer by bow, sparingly. Center pressure leaves a hair of crown to sand; end-biased pressure feathers an edge to zero — but the extruded back gives less bow per ounce than the flat 09273, which is what makes its pass flat and its straightedge honest. Use it as a gauge. Between coats, stand it dry across the joint and read the light under its edge. Keep it pristine and dry. A finish blade shows every nick — wipe both faces on the pan rim each stroke, retire a dinged edge, and dry the blue steel at day's end.

Why 12 inches for the finish?
Because the last coat has to feather wider than the fill — twelve inches reaches past the fill's edges and erases them; ten can't. It's also the go-to for butt joints and skim-coating.
What does the extruded back give me here?
A flatter finish pass and a truer straightedge for checking joints. The flat-backed 09273 trades that for an easier feather.
Can I check my joints for flat with it?
Yes — that's a core use. Stand it dry across the joint and read the light under the edge. Keep one edge undinged for it.
Will it rust?
Wet, yes — blue steel. Wipe dry. The maintenance-free version at this width and back is the stainless 09343.
Is there a wider one?
The 14" 09244, for the widest butt joints and full-wall level-5 skim. It's the only 14" in the blue-steel run.
