Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • Heavy-Duty Construction: Designed for rigorous use, this jab saw easily cuts through drywall or wood.
  • Sharp Penetrating Point: The sharp point is engineered to penetrate drywall without the need for pre-drilling, allowing you to start cuts quickly and efficiently.
  • Double-Ground Teeth: The high carbon steel teeth are double-ground for cutting in both directions, ensuring smooth, fast, and accurate cuts with every stroke.
CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Round holes with a show edge — the circle cutter's territory (section 2e).
  • Straight field cuts — cutting a sheet to size is score-and-snap with a utility knife against the T-square (utility-knife line), which is faster, dustless, and leaves a cleaner edge than any saw; a jab saw dragged down a four-foot field cut is the slow, dusty wrong answer.
  • Deep wood joinery and framing — real saws.
  • Finish carpentry — the kerf is rough by design.
  • The saw's honest office is holes and notches with corners, plunged and cut where a knife cannot reach.

How the pros run it

01

The jab

tip set just inside the waste, handle gripped low, one firm palm strike on the handle butt — let the point do the plunging; do not saw your way in from an edge when the plunge is right there. The saw: full-length strokes, and keep the blade loaded in both directions — the double-ground teeth mean the return stroke is cutting too, and a blade allowed to coast on the pull just makes dust. Track the kerf onto the waste side of the line. Support: off hand flat beside the kerf, every stroke, no exceptions — the blowout failure mode is always the same, an unsupported board tearing its back paper. Edge life: gypsum is abrasive rock in a paper envelope, and it dulls carbon steel steadily; a jab saw is effectively a consumable at the point — when the tip stops plunging cleanly at a strike, the saw has spent its working life, and forcing a dull point just tears paper. Keep it dry between jobs; high-carbon steel blooms rust where a stainless blade would shrug. Slowness is the safety feature: near wiring, a hand stroke stops the instant it touches something that is not gypsum — a spinning spiral bit does not, which is exactly why the hand saw remains the right tool around a live-until-proven-dead box.
02

A word on dust

cutting gypsum throws a fine dust that is a respiratory irritant — wear a dust mask for extended cutting and especially overhead, where it falls into your face.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
Why doesn't it need a drilled starter hole?
The point is ground sharp enough to plunge through gypsum's crushable core at a single palm strike — that is the whole species, and Hyde's claim states it in five words: "cuts without drilling."
Can it cut a round hole?
For a hidden one behind an escutcheon or plate, yes. For a round opening whose edge will show under a trim ring — a recessed can, a vent — no; a sawn circle is really a polygon, and that hole belongs to the 09110 circle cutter.
Does it really cut both directions?
Yes — the high-carbon-steel teeth are double-ground to cut on the push and the pull, so the blade advances on every stroke instead of coasting home.
Will it cut wood?
Drywall or wood, including plywood, at board scale — notch a plywood edge, clip a shim, open a small subfloor penetration. Deep wood ripping and framing crosscuts belong to real wood saws.
Cut the box before or after hanging the sheet?
A fixed box solid on its stud → after, plunging inside the footprint and riding the box as a template. Several boxes on one sheet, a box near a sheet edge, or overhead work → before, on the horses.
Does it get dull, and can I sharpen it?
Gypsum is abrasive and dulls the teeth steadily; the point especially. Treat the saw as a consumable at the tip — when it stops plunging cleanly at a strike, it has done its life. Keep it dry so the carbon steel does not rust between jobs.
