Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • Large Cutting Capacity: Capable of cutting round holes up to 16 inches (406mm) in diameter, accommodating a wide range of applications from small fixtures to larger installations.
  • Adjustable Pivot Point: Features an adjustable pivot point to customize the size of the cut, allowing for flexibility in hole dimensions and ensuring accuracy.
  • English and Metric: Includes both English and metric calibrations with 1/8-inch (5mm) graduations for precise measurements, making it easy to achieve the exact size required.
CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Rectangles and anything with corners — outlet boxes, registers with square throats, access panels: that is the jab saw's job, and the cutter cannot make a straight side or a corner at all.
  • Holes it has no center to plant on — the pivot needs a markable center, so a hole cut against an already-installed can means measuring and transferring the center to the sheet, cutting on the horses, and then hanging; the cutter is a before-the-sheet-goes-up tool.
  • Substrates that do not break along a score — the score-and-tap method depends on gypsum's snap, so the tool is a drywall cutter, not a cutter for plywood, cement board, or anything that will not part along a scored line (claims name drywall applications only — do not extend the scope).
  • And it leaves a pivot pinhole dead center of the plug — waste that goes out with the plug, worth a reassuring sentence but not a defect.

How the pros run it

01

Plant the pivot and let it carry the load

The whole accuracy of the tool is the center staying put — press the pivot firmly into its mark and let it, not your hand, hold the radius through the sweep. Score in passes, don't force one deep cut. Several light revolutions cut cleaner and truer than one hard pass that skips and wanders; gypsum scores best in layers. Transfer the center before you flip. The two-face method lives or dies on the back center matching the front — use the pivot's own center hole to punch the mark through, or the back score misses and the plug won't tap free clean. Tap, don't punch. A measured hammer tap on the scored plug pops it along both grooves; a hard punch cracks the plug and can carry the break past the score into the keep side. The blade is a consumable. When the wheel starts dragging or tearing paper instead of parting it, the edge is gone — replace the blade rather than press harder (replacement-blade SKU not yet resolved). Keep the steel dry between jobs. A word on dust: scoring and tapping throw gypsum dust — a mask for extended work, especially cutting a ceiling penetration over your own head.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
How big a hole will it cut?
Up to 16 inches (406mm) in diameter, which covers the whole round-penetration universe of a house — recessed cans, round boxes, vent collars, exhaust fans — on a single adjustable pivot.
How does it leave such a clean edge?
By scoring both faces and tapping out the plug: two opposing score lines meet in the middle and the disc pops free with the face paper intact right to the line — no torn halo for a trim ring to cover. (The score-and-tap method is drawn from the trade literature; Hyde's claims name the capability, not the procedure.)
Can I use it after the sheet is hung?
No — the pivot needs a center to plant on, so a hole against an installed fixture gets its center transferred to the sheet, cut on the horses, and then hung. It is a before-the-sheet-goes-up tool.
How do I size it to the light or vent?
Set the beam off the 1/8"/5mm graduations to the fixture's rough-opening size, not to the trim ring's outer diameter — the ring's overhang is the only tolerance you get, and it forgives about an eighth of an inch. Dry-check on an offcut first.
How is it different from the jab saw?
The saw cuts rectangles and can cut in place riding a box; the cutter scores true circles that a saw's straight chords can't match, but only on the horses with a plantable center. Round versus cornered, bench versus in-wall.
The blade is dull — can I replace it?
Yes, the cutting blade is replaceable by design; that is the consumable logic of a scoring tool. The exact replacement-blade part for the 09110 is not yet resolved in our records — identify it before relying on field replacement.
Will it cut plywood or cement board?
No — the method depends on gypsum snapping along a score, so it is a drywall tool only; substrates that don't break along a score are out of scope.
