  • Fill and skim coats. At 4" the blade is too narrow to feather a seam out to the 8"–12" the fill and skim demand; used past the tape coat it leaves a ridge inside the tapered recess instead of a feathered, invisible edge. Step to the wide blades.
  • Scraping. A flexible blade folds against a ridge or dried spatter. Knocking down high spots and lifting old paint is stiff-blade work — the chisel-edged 02601 or a retired knife doing scraper duty — not this one.
  • Setting popped nails. This family has a wood handle and no Hammer Head® steel butt cap; you cannot set a popped fastener below flush with it. That is a specific feature of the "HH" models — the carbon 02570 (4") or the stainless 01550 (4"). Reach for one if your work finds popped nails mid-coat.
  • Putty-knife duty. Nail-hole filling and paint scraping is the putty knife's job, a different Hyde line entirely. This is a seams-and-corners tool.

How the pros run it

Grip and the flex point

Palm the handle with your thumb riding onto the back of the blade for control. The hollow-ground carbon blade has a flex point ground into it, and the skill of the tool is finding where the blade begins to bow and working right at it — enough bow to feather compound flat, not so much that the blade folds and dumps its load. Loading. Take compound across the blade from the pan, not on the tip; a lightly, evenly loaded blade lays a clean coat, an overloaded one leaves lines. Pan discipline. Every pass starts and ends at the pan — load, work the wall, wipe the blade on the rim coming back so you never carry setting compound into your fresh mud (any mud pan in the line, from the plastic 09060 to the stainless 09012, exists for exactly this). The carbon rule. This blade rusts. Wash it the moment you finish, and dry it before it is put away — water-based compound left on carbon overnight blooms rust, and a pitted edge telegraphs every flaw into your next coat. The clear-coat slows this but wears first at the edge that does the work. If you won't perform the wash-and-dry ritual, buy the stainless version and skip it; that is the whole reason stainless exists in this line. Handle. The hardwood is solvent-resistant but still wood — it lives longest drying out between jobs rather than soaking in a bucket.

Is this for applying compound or scraping it off?
Applying. It's a flexible loading-and-feathering blade; a stiff scraper is a different tool (02601).
Why a 4" and not a 6"?
Corners and the tape coat. The 4" keeps pressure on the tape's center line and clears the adjoining wall in an inside corner; the 6" is the open-flat and fastener-field width.
Will it rust?
Yes — it's high-carbon. Wash and dry it after every use. Want zero maintenance? The stainless 06578 or 06577 in the same width.
Hardwood vs. the nylon-handled knives?
Same job, same carbon blade. Hardwood is the traditional grip that outlasts a decade of washing; nylon (Black & Silver®) is the jobsite-default handle.
Can I set a popped screw with the handle?
No — no Hammer Head® steel cap on this family. Use an HH model (01550, 02570).
Is this a putty knife?
No. Putty knives are the narrower paint-aisle repair tools; this is a drywall seams-and-corners knife.
