Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • Stainless Steel Blade: Provides strength and flexibility for precise application and smoothing.
  • Ideal Flex Point: Allows for effective spreading of putty or joint compound.
  • Full-Tang Blade: Ensures durability and stability during use.
DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Fill and skim coats over seams — those feather out to 8–14", which is taping-knife width; a 4" blade can't span a seam and screed it flat.
  • Scraping or lifting dried ridges — this is a flexible finishing blade, not a stiff scraper; it bows under a hard scrape.
  • Setting popped nails with the handle — no Hammer Head® butt on this model; that's the 01550.
  • Prying, mixing against a bucket wall as a chisel, opening lids — the abuse a stiff putty knife shrugs off will roll the edge or stress the tang on a flexible finishing knife.

How the pros run it

01

Bedding feel

The single skill this knife teaches is embedding tape with mud left under it — enough film to grip, not so much it floats. Wipe from the center of a run toward each end at roughly 45°, firm and steady; if an edge lifts or a blister rises, lift the tape back to there, re-butter, and re-lay rather than burying the fault. Flex on purpose. Steer pressure toward the blade's center so the corners ride slightly proud and don't cut tram-lines. Angle. Low to load and bed; high and firm to wipe tight and shave a fastener. Pan discipline. Load from the pan, wipe the blade on the rim every return stroke — a crumb on the edge scores the tape coat, and the tape coat is the one every later coat inherits. Maintenance. Stainless, so wash and go; keep the corners clean and dress a rolled edge flat.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
What size joint knife should I start with for taping?
A 4–6" for the tape coat; the 01540 is the classic tape-coat width and the best of them for inside corners.
01540 or 01550?
Identical blades; the 01550 adds a nail-setting Hammer Head® butt. Remodel work → 01550. Otherwise → 01540.
Can it do the fill and skim coats too?
No — those need a wide taping knife to feather the seam flat. The 4" beds the tape and finishes corners and screws.
Will it rust?
No — stainless, wash and go. The carbon 02550 is keener but needs drying.
Paper or mesh tape?
Paper in corners always, and generally for strength; mesh only with setting compound. The tape decision is covered in the joints application guide.
