  • Like every stiff blade it can't conform to a wall, so it leaves tram-lines and drags compound out of shallow spots — fill with a flexible knife, not this.
  • For a broad flat paint field, the narrow width is a liability; step up to the 1-1/2" (06158) or 2" (06308) stiff.
  • And when the word for the job is "dig," "chip," or "excavate" rather than "scrape" — cured epoxy, gasket cement, encrusted shop surfaces — the standard .055" stainless blade will feel whippy against that load, and a heavier-built scraper (the Extra-Heavy-Duty hardwood chisel 07210, same 1-1/4" width) is the right escalation.

Low angle, concentrated force

15–30°, and remember the narrow edge multiplies your pressure — a 1-1/4" blade puts more force on every inch than any wider scraper at the same push, so ease off before you gouge the substrate. Push for power, pull for control: near edges and finished surfaces you don't want to mar, pull. Undercut, don't just lift: for prep work the goal is sound crater walls, so scrape back past the visibly loose material to where it's tight. Stainless care is behavioral: the blade meets moisture in most of these jobs and needs no drying ritual, but dress the edge square with a fine file when it dents so it tracks clean. Use the butt as intended: the Hammer Head resets fasteners; it isn't a chisel-driver. Overmold stays out of solvent soaks.

Rare Stainless Steel Tool

The quality of Hyde stainless putty knives are excellent. I don't use these items as intended for jobbers but for landscape maintenance. They are used to scrape and clean off dirt/mud on brick/stone walkways as well as cut into sod to create clearance between the lawn and sidewalk. Have used these tools for years and still have the original ones I bought a decade or more ago. It is rare to find stainless tools but fortunately Hyde is one of the few companies that offer such items. I will continue to use their tools although prices have increased significantly as all other things in the past several years.
