Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • Stainless Steel Blade: Provides strength and flexibility for precise application and smoothing.
  • Ideal Flex Point: Allows for effective spreading of putty or joint compound.
  • Full-Tang Blade: Ensures durability and stability during use.
DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Seam tape coats — too narrow; leaves a ridge in the recess (§2e). Step to 01540/01840.
  • Fill and skim coats — feathering a joint out to 8–14" is a wide-blade job (taping knives); a 3" blade cannot span a seam and feather it flat.
  • Scraping and demolition — this is a flexible finishing blade; it bows under a hard scrape and will not lift dried ridges or old paint the way a stiff, chisel-edged scraper does. That is a different tool.
  • Prying and pounding — flexible full-tang stainless is not a pry bar, and this model has no Hammer Head® butt, so do not use the handle end to set nails (see §5).

How the pros run it

01

Grip and pressure

Handle in the palm, index finger laid along the spine when you want fine angle control on a spot or a patch edge. Because the tang runs in line with the blade, your wrist reads the blade's pressure directly — that feedback is the whole reason a joint knife beats a backed taping knife for close, feeling work. Angle. Low and loading (15–20°) to lay compound on; high and firm (past 45°) to wipe it tight and shave a fastener flush. Flex, used on purpose. Bias your pressure toward the blade's center and the corners float clear of the surface, so they don't dig tram-lines; that is the flexible knife's core trick, and it matters even at 3". Edge and corners. Keep the corners clean and un-dinged — a nicked corner on a narrow blade scores every pass. Dress a rolled edge lightly flat; retire a blade with a real chip. Between passes, wipe the blade on the pan rim every stroke or two — a dried crumb riding the edge scars everything it touches. Stainless earns its keep here: at day's end it goes in the bucket and comes out clean, no oiling.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
Is this a putty knife?
No — same silhouette, different tool. It's a flexible joint knife ground for compound and tape, not the glazing/scraping putty-knife family. At 3" they look alike; buy by the label and the aisle.
Can I tape a seam with it?
Bed tape, no — it's too narrow and leaves a ridge in the recess. Spot the screws and finish the tight corners of a taping job, yes. Bed the flat seams with a 4–6" knife.
Will it rust?
No maintenance ritual — it's stainless; wash and go. The carbon 3" sibling takes a keener edge but must be dried.
Can I set a popped nail with the handle?
Not this model — no Hammer Head® butt. The smallest B&S stainless knife that sets nails is the 4" 01550.
Why so small?
For the screws, patches, returns, and reveals that wider blades can't reach flat. It's the detail knife, not the finishing knife.
