Worked-material boundary: the numbered batch below is only for a 50 lb. bag of USG Sheetrock® Brand Tuf-Tex® Wall and Ceiling Texture under submittal J751, revision 10-07, used for the document's bold spatter/knockdown branch. It is not a generic “texture mud” recipe. Confirm the bag identity, package weight, current TDS, and current SDS before use. A different bag or revision gets its own recipe.
Job: prepare one identified powder texture as a uniform bold-pattern spray batch, preserve the manufacturer’s water and soak limits, hand it to an admitted spray-and-knockdown system, and close the station without turning material or equipment gaps into folklore.
Time: J751 requires at least a 15-minute soak, longer in cold water, between the first mix and remix. It gives no universal initial-mix or remix duration and no knockdown wait. At 72°F and 50% relative humidity it reports 1–2 hours to touch and at least 24 hours before overpainting; those are product-data conditions, not a promise for every room.
Difficulty: document control plus batch control. The motions are simple. The consequential work is keeping one exact material recipe intact, refusing an unresolved water conflict, and not claiming a Hyde head, drill, hopper, nozzle, pressure, or knife is compatible where the manufacturers have not said so.
Their documented constructions and drive interfaces are recorded below. This guide does not select one for Tuf-Tex because J751 specifies only a “variable speed power agitator” and supplies no agitator geometry, speed, power, shank, head-size, or vessel-clearance criterion that cross-certifies a row tool.
Everything else: the sealed and identified 50 lb. Tuf-Tex bag; J751 and SDS 48000020004; drinkable water; a clean measured-water vessel; a clean mixing vessel approved by USG for the actual batch; a variable-speed power agitator admitted by USG and its own manufacturer; timer; batch card; HEPA-filtered vacuum and sealable labeled waste container for dry spills; ventilation and PPE selected from the SDS and exposure assessment; an admitted professional spray system; a same-substrate, same-primer test board; and the manufacturer-approved knockdown equipment and cleanup route.
First gate: freeze the exact material system
“Texture” can mean ready-mixed spray coating, powder texture, thinned drying-type joint compound, aggregate acoustic finish, or a proprietary product with a timed breakdown. Those products do not share water, order, soak, remix, equipment, PPE, or cleanup instructions.
For this worked branch, the batch card must say:
Material: USG Sheetrock Brand Tuf-Tex Wall and Ceiling Texture.
Document: J751, revision 10-07.
Package: 50 lb. (22.68 kg).
Pattern branch: bold spatter/knockdown.
SDS: 48000020004, version 01, issued January 17, 2014, unless the current product page or bag supplies a later exact revision.
Conditions: product, air, and surface maintained at least 55°F (13°C) through finishing and until dry.
Surface release: prepared surface dry and primed as J751 directs before texture is mixed for application.
If the package is not 50 lb., the product name is merely similar, or the current bag/TDS differs, stop. Do not scale the numbers by eye, borrow the 40 lb. figures from an older application tip, or use a joint-compound recipe.
The J751 water conflict is a real stop, not a math puzzle
J751’s mixing directions say to start with up to 3.75 gal. per 50 lb. bag, then allow up to 3/4 gal. additional water for bold patterns or up to 1.8 gal. additional for light patterns, while also saying total water must not exceed 4.6 gal. Its product-data table separately prints 4.68–6 gal. per 50 lb. bag. Those statements do not reconcile: 3.75 + 1.8 exceeds 4.6, and the table’s minimum already exceeds the mixing section’s maximum.
This guide does not repair USG’s document. The bold branch is the only worked branch because its stepwise numbers can remain inside the explicit 4.6-gallon ceiling: start at no more than 3.75 gallons, then add no more than 0.75 gallon, while independently stopping at 4.6 gallons total. The apparent table conflict remains flagged. For a light pattern, or for any proposed water total above 4.6 gallons, obtain a current written instruction from USG before batching.
Second gate: admit an agitator without inventing mixer fit
J751 requires a clean mixing vessel equipped with a variable-speed power agitator. It does not name Hyde, a head form, head diameter, shank, chuck, drill model, rpm, horsepower, torque, vessel size, or batch capacity. Therefore none of the following product facts completes the material gate:

Use a row tool only if the current material and tool manufacturers resolve the missing interface for the exact setup. A Hyde “compounds” or “wet/dry” claim does not override the material maker. Do not infer that 09114 is admitted because Tuf-Tex starts dry, that steel is better for lumps, that a longer shaft fits a particular vessel, or that a larger head works faster. No accepted source establishes those pairings or outcomes.
The same rule applies downstream. J751 authorizes “professional equipment” for machine application but gives no hopper-gun specification. Hyde’s 09980 record gives a minimum air claim for that gun, not Tuf-Tex approval. Do not combine the two documents into an invented spray system.
The controlled bold-pattern batch
Prepare the surface and the batch station before opening powder
J751 requires a sound, dry, clean substrate free of oil, grease, mildew, efflorescence, and contaminants. It requires a prime coat to equalize porosity after the prepared surface dries: Sheetrock First Coat flat latex paint or a good-quality high-solids interior latex flat wall paint, applied undiluted and allowed to dry. Do not mix a production batch while the wall still lacks its required release.
Set the mixer on a stable floor-level station. Verify the agitator and vessel through both manufacturers’ current instructions. De-energize before installing or inspecting the head. Stage the timer, measured water, dry-spill controls, PPE, waste container, and downstream test board. If cleanup or exposure controls are not ready, the batch is not ready.
Put on the protection required for this exact powder and spray
SDS 48000020004 classifies the product for carcinogenicity Category 1A and reports less than 0.5% crystalline-silica impurity. It directs users to minimize dust during opening and mixing, provide sufficient ventilation for dust-forming work, wear approved safety goggles, use suitable gloves for prolonged or repeated contact, and use long sleeves and long pants. If engineering controls do not hold airborne concentration below the applicable limit, the SDS requires an approved respirator selected for the exposure; it specifically routes respirator use through an OSHA 1910.134/ANSI Z88.2 program.
That is the PPE decision. “Wear an N95” is not. Dry charging, wet spraying, spill recovery, and later sanding are different exposures; the current SDS and workplace assessment select protection for each. Keep the room isolated and use ventilation that controls exposure without violating J751’s direction to avoid drafts during application.
Measure the initial water—do not pour from a hose
For the J751 50 lb. bold branch, put no more than 3.75 gal. (14.195 L) of drinkable water into the clean mixing vessel. Record the actual starting amount.
Do not add powder first. Do not substitute wash water, hot water, additive, another compound, or leftover texture. If additional hardness and bond are specified, J751 allows up to one gallon of Sheetrock First Coat and says the additive volume must replace an equal volume of mixing water. That optional system change needs its own written batch card; it is not silently included here.
Add powder to water slowly and mix to J751’s first endpoint
With the admitted variable-speed agitator operating only as its manufacturers direct, slowly add the dry Tuf-Tex powder to the measured water. Keep the bag opening low enough to control dust. Do not dump a bag from shoulder height, squeeze dust into the room, or use the rotating head as dust collection.
Continue only until the J751 endpoint: heavy but lump-free. That phrase is the first viscosity control. It is not “pancake batter,” a cone time, a drill-load reading, or a universal number of minutes. If the admitted equipment instructions do not provide a usable operation method, stop rather than writing one into the margin.
Soak for at least 15 minutes
Stop the agitator as its manual requires, de-energize it, and start the timer. J751 requires at least 15 minutes, longer in cold water. Protect the vessel from contamination during the soak. Do not treat the pause as optional because the first mix looks smooth, and do not invent how much longer cold water needs; the document gives no number. Resolve that with USG or use conditions for which the current instruction is complete.
Remix to the second exact endpoint
After the required soak, remix under the admitted equipment instructions until the mixture has the J751 appearance: wet, smooth, and creamy. Scrape or handle the vessel only if the material and equipment instructions authorize the method, with the agitator de-energized whenever hands or hand tools enter.
Inspect a stopped sample. Dry islands, hard granules, streaks, or material crust from old batches mean the endpoint is not met. Continue only within the documented process. Do not chase contamination with more water.
Adjust the bold-pattern branch in measured small additions
J751 permits small additions of water to the wet mix to reach desired spray consistency. For its bold-pattern branch, additional water is capped at 3/4 gal., and the mixing section independently caps total water at 4.6 gal. per 50 lb. bag. Record every addition and the running total. Remix after each addition as the material/equipment instructions allow, then test.
Stop adding water when either condition occurs:
the admitted spray system produces the approved bold spatter/knockdown sample; or
the batch reaches the lower of the remaining branch allowance and the 4.6-gallon total ceiling.
Do not overthin. J751 names poor adhesion, lack of hide, and texture variation as consequences. It supplies no transferable viscosity number, so the accepted same-system sample board is the application test. If the batch cannot spray through admitted equipment before the limit, quarantine it and resolve equipment/material compatibility; more water is not the repair.
Release the batch only through an admitted spray-and-knockdown system
The batch card follows the pail. It records product, bag weight, J751 revision, lot/date, initial and added water, soak start/end, conditions, agitator identity and approval basis, PPE controls, and sample result.
J751 recognizes spatter/knockdown and directs application with professional equipment. It does not give nozzle diameter, pressure, CFM, spray distance, hopper load, pass speed, fluid-control setting, knockdown tool, blade angle, or wait time. Those values must come from the exact spray and knockdown equipment instructions plus an approved test. Do not pour this batch into a gun until the pairing is admitted.
Maintain at least 55°F air and surface temperature during application and until dry. Avoid drafts while applying; ventilate after application to aid drying. Do not use unvented gas or oil heaters. J751 says the finish may be painted after overnight drying and, under its 72°F/50% RH product-data condition, requires at least 24 hours before overpainting. The unpainted surface is not washable or scrubbable.
Close the station under the SDS and equipment manuals
Disconnect power before touching the agitator. Neither J751 nor SDS 48000020004 supplies a universal tool-wash procedure for this exact equipment, so this guide does not invent a rinse-spin, solvent, drain, or reuse instruction. Follow the material maker’s current cleanup direction and each equipment manual; where they leave a gap, resolve it before batching.
For dry spills, the SDS directs HEPA-filtered vacuum recovery into approved, labeled, securely sealed containers. It says to avoid discharge to drains, sewers, and other water systems and to dispose under federal, state, and local rules. Do not dry sweep, blow powder with compressed air, or wash texture solids into a drain. Wash exposed skin after handling, clean work clothing and protective equipment separately as directed, close unused powder against moisture, and document cleanup completion.
What goes wrong—and the evidence-led response
The bag or water numbers do not match this page. Stop. This is a J751/50 lb. worked branch, not a ratio. Use the exact current package documents.
The crew asks for the “light-pattern” water total. J751 conflicts internally. Do not choose between 4.6 and 6 gallons or add 1.8 gallons to 3.75 by arithmetic. Obtain USG’s current written instruction.
Dry pockets survive the first mix. Check powder-addition rate, clean equipment, and the heavy-but-lump-free endpoint. Do not skip the soak or add unmeasured water.
The soaked batch is granular rather than wet, smooth, and creamy. It has not reached J751’s second endpoint, or the material/equipment/conditions are wrong. Quarantine and diagnose; do not pass it to a hopper.
The spray test spits or clogs. Stop the system and isolate it per its manual. Check contamination, unresolved equipment compatibility, and the documented batch endpoints. Never solve a clog by exceeding the water ceiling.
The pattern lies flat or varies across the board. Compare total water, sample conditions, primer, spray equipment, and application controls. J751 identifies overthinning as a cause of texture variation; it does not authorize powder-back or another additive as a rescue.
The drill lugs, overheats, or twists. Release the trigger and de-energize. A registered Hyde lead is not proof of material, vessel, drill, or batch fit. Do not add speed, water, an adapter, or a larger head as a guessed cure.
A dust cloud escapes during charging. Stop, isolate the area, restore engineering controls, and follow SDS spill/exposure response. Do not keep mixing through an uncontrolled exposure.
The ceiling begins to sag. Stop application. J751 warns that heavy water-based textures can sag gypsum ceilings where humidity, ventilation, board orientation, thickness, or framing spacing is wrong. This is an assembly problem, not a drier-batch opportunity.
Can I use ordinary joint compound instead? Not from this recipe. Tuf-Tex is an identified powder texture with its own J751 sequence. Joint compound has different preparation and product limits.
How much water for knockdown? For the exact J751 50 lb. bold branch: start with up to 3.75 gallons, adjust in small measured additions no greater than 0.75 gallon, and never exceed the mixing section’s 4.6-gallon total. Stop earlier when the admitted system’s approved sample is reached.
What viscosity should I target? J751 gives qualitative endpoints only: first heavy but lump-free, after soak wet/smooth/creamy, then the approved bold spray consistency. It gives no viscosity number. This guide invents none.
Which of the four Hyde mixers fits Tuf-Tex? No accepted USG document cross-certifies one. The row links all four as leads; use one only after the missing material/equipment interface is resolved.
The 09105’s Hyde low-rpm requirement does not become a Tuf-Tex setting, and no number transfers from another Hyde tool.
How large a batch will each Hyde mixer handle? No accepted source establishes Tuf-Tex batch capacity for any row tool. The 50 lb. bag size is material packaging, not a mixer rating.
How long should I mix? J751 states endpoints, not initial or remix durations. It does state at least 15 minutes of soak. Do not convert the soak into mixer runtime.
How long before knockdown? J751 supplies no knockdown wait.
Can I wash the tools in a sink? Not by assumption. The SDS says avoid discharge to drains, sewers, and water systems. Follow the exact material/equipment cleanup and local disposal rules.
History footnote
USG’s history dates Sheetrock® gypsum panels to 1917, when a factory panel made fast, flat interior construction possible. Spray texture is a later production answer to that same wall: instead of demanding a perfectly invisible plane under every light, a controlled broken surface turns small visual variation into a deliberate finish. The technology’s useful history is not an inventor myth; it is the moment texture became a repeatable material system whose powder, water, soak, machine, and finish all had written controls.
