CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Oil, alkyd, and varnish. SRT is water-side; use natural bristle (81302) for solvent finishes.
  • Covering many face widths. Only two widths here — for a size ladder, the straight SRT set (81305) or the four-size 81304 fits better.
  • The lowest-cost everyday job. SRT is a premium filament; for basic flat latex the plain-polyester 81303 cut-and-fill set costs less.
  • Whole walls and big fields. Both brushes are hand tools — roll the open area and cut-and-fill the edges and faces with this pair.
  • Fine detail and scrubbing. Sub-half-inch touch-up is the artist drawer (80011–80017); scrubbing/stripping is the wire-brush side of the catalog.

Cutting with the sash

light-to-moderate load, pencil grip high on the handle, lead with the long corner and let it steer; refresh the bead before it thins, and keep your eye on the point, not the heel. Laying off with the flat: apply with pressure, finish with almost none — long, light, single-direction strokes so the fast paint closes smooth. Wet edge: small sections, each laid into the last while it's still open; SRT extends your working time a little, not indefinitely. Cleaning (what makes it a multi-year pair): water-based paint washes in warm soapy water — flush up into the heel until it runs clear, spin or shake dry, comb both brushes straight, and hang or wrap so the sash keeps its angled point and the flat keeps its shape. A sash brush is only as good as its preserved point; paint dried in the heel or a brush stood on its tip ends it early. Comb and hang every session (the 45950 comb and 43470 spinner are made for it).

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
Why only two brushes?
Because two is the minimum that does the whole job — an angular sash to cut lines and a straight flat to lay off faces. It's the method, not a size ladder.
What's the 2-1/2" angular for?
Cutting crisp lines and edges — the most-used brush in interior painting. Its long diagonal corner draws the bead.
Latex or oil?
Water-based, especially fast-drying low-VOC latex (that's what SRT is built for). For oil, use natural bristle (81302).
How is it different from the 81305?
81305 is three straight flats with no cut-in brush; this pair includes the angular sash. Different shapes, same SRT filament.
Is SRT worth it here?
On the cut line and on visible trim in fast-dry paint, yes — that's where SRT's smooth release shows most.
How do I clean it?
Warm soapy water up into the heel until clear, then comb both brushes straight and hang to dry — protect the sash's point.
