Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • Use to clean and restore paint brushes. Sharp, pointed stainless steel teeth penetrate bristles to loosen and remove old paint. Polypropylene handle unaffected by most common paint thinners.
DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • It is not a scratch brush.
  • Those pointed stainless teeth are for combing filament, not for scrubbing rust, scale, or paint off a workpiece — that is the attack side of this line (wire and nylon brushes), and using the comb as a surface tool bends the teeth out of register.
  • It is not a roller tool — there is no scraper face on it; stripping a roller cover is the two-sided 45960's job.
  • It will not dry the brush — combing leaves the fill clean but soaked, and a wet brush wrapped tight mildews; the spinner (43470) or a shake-and-hang is the drying step.
  • And it is not a substitute for washing — it finishes a wash and cannot replace one; comb a brush you didn't rinse and you just pack the paint deeper.

How the pros run it

01

Direction

always root-to-tip, along the filament lay. Combing across or against it crosses the fill and, on natural bristle, can fracture the flagged tips. Pressure: let the points do the work — they are sharp enough that leaning only risks gouging the ferrule lip or bending a tooth. Wet, not dry: comb while the paint is still soft from the wash; a comb is a cleaning tool, not a chisel for dried film. Both faces: flat brushes are two-sided — comb both faces and the heel gets worked from both directions. Clean the comb: paint dries in the teeth too; wipe or rinse it so the next stroke isn't re-depositing yesterday's job.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
Latex or oil — which brushes is it for?
Both. Wash in the correct medium first (soapy water for waterborne, the coating's solvent for oil/alkyd/varnish), then comb; the stainless teeth and thinner-proof handle don't care which.
Will the teeth damage the bristles?
No, combed root-to-tip along the lay — that motion re-parallels the fill and rebuilds the chisel. Only cross-combing or forcing set paint risks harm.
Can it save a hardened brush?
A partly-set one, often — soak in solvent, then comb repeatedly. A fully cured, rock-hard brush is past it; forcing the teeth breaks them and the filaments both.
Will the teeth rust?
They're stainless — meant to sit in the wash water and the solvent tray without blooming. The exact alloy grade is not published, so none is claimed here .
Does it clean rollers too?
No. It's a brush comb; the roller-scraping face is the 45960's.
