How to Choose and Use a First Brush Kit

The short answer: four questions choose the set

What cleans the coating up?

Read the can before reading the brush package.

Water cleanup — latex, acrylic, and most waterborne enamels: choose a polyester set. The everyday cut-and-fill choice is 81303. The finish-focused SRT cut-and-fill choice is 81307. If the work mainly needs several straight widths, choose 80000, 81304, or 81305.

Label-specified solvent cleanup — traditional oil paint, alkyd enamel, oil varnish, or oil stain: choose 81302, the black-natural-bristle cut-and-fill set.

Shellac, lacquer, catalyzed coating, two-part finish, or an unfamiliar specialty product: do not choose by the words “oil” or “solvent” alone. Follow the coating maker's applicator and cleanup directions.

Do you need to draw a clean line?

If the job includes wall-to-ceiling edges, trim-to-wall boundaries, sash, frames, or any place two colors meet, choose a set with an angular sash:

81302 for traditional oil and alkyd work.

81303 for ordinary waterborne work.

81307 for fast-drying waterborne paint where SRT filament and a larger cut brush fit the job.

The other three sets are straight-only size ladders:

80000: 1", 2", and 3" straight polyester.

81304: 1", 1-1/2", 2", and 3" straight polyester.

81305: 1-1/2", 2", and 3" straight polyester SRT.

A straight flat can edge a forgiving surface, but it does not present the long pointed corner that lets an angular sash draw a controlled bead. If you buy a straight-only set for a room, add a separate angular brush; the set is the fill half of the method, not the whole method.

Do you need a method or a width ladder?

A cut-and-fill set gives you two shapes. The angular brush cuts the lines; the straight brush lays off the faces. The 81302, 81303, and 81307 are method sets.

A width ladder gives you one shape in several widths. It is useful when the work is mostly doors, panels, shelving, boards, cabinets, or trim faces of different sizes and another tool already owns the cut lines. The 80000, 81304, and 81305 are width-ladder sets.

Is ordinary polyester enough, or does fast-drying paint justify SRT?

Standard polyester is the straightforward waterborne choice. SRT means Solid Round Tapered, a synthetic filament family intended to carry and release modern fast-drying low-VOC paint more evenly. In practice, that matters most on visible trim, doors, cabinets, and cut lines where rebrushing a setting film leaves drag marks.

Choose SRT because the coating dries quickly and the brushed finish will be inspected close, not because three initials can fix bad preparation or technique. SRT cannot level debris, hide sanding scratches, extend a paint's stated open time, or make a straight brush angular.

What a brush set is — and what it is not

These six packages contain brushes. They are not complete room-painting kits.

A typical room is a two-tool operation: an angular brush cuts the perimeter and handles corners, while a roller covers the open field. A brush set covers trim, edges, panels, narrow members, furniture, doors, and the hand-brushed work around the roller. Even a 3" flat is a poor substitute for a roller across a whole wall: it takes too long, multiplies lap opportunities, and leaves a different application texture.

The set also does not choose the coating, prepare the substrate, or make a failing surface sound. Wash grease, scrape loose paint, fill defects, sand gloss or repairs, remove dust, and apply the primer required by the substrate before opening the finish. A fine brush laid over dirt or loose paint produces a fine-looking failure.

Finally, a brush count is not a promise of completeness. Three straight brushes are three widths of one motion. Two brushes can be more complete than four when one is straight and one angular. Count the shapes and chemistry, not only the pieces.

The six sets — the exact buyer calls

Choose 80000 when the job is waterborne, the useful widths are 1", 2", and 3", and true angular cut-in work is absent or already covered by another brush.

The 1" straight is for narrow trim faces, small panels, shelf edges, and controlled touch-in.

The 2" straight is the general member for casing, baseboard, door rails and stiles, and medium panels.

The 3" straight covers broad hand-brushed faces such as doors, shelving, wide boards, and cabinet sides.

Concrete statement false for 81304: 80000 does not include a 1-1/2" intermediate flat. Concrete statement false for 81303: 80000 has a 3" field brush but no angular sash. Concrete statement false for 81305: 80000 is standard polyester, not SRT, and includes a 1" detail flat.

The evidence boundary matters here more than on any sibling. The packet holds no accepted product-scoped claims; even the three widths, straight shape, polyester fill, and plastic handles come from the store identity rather than an accepted exact-model claim set.

Choose 81302 when the coating is a traditional oil paint, alkyd enamel, varnish, or oil stain whose label calls for a natural-bristle applicator. It contains:

A 1" straight flat for narrow trim, small faces, muntins, shelf edges, and controlled correction.

A 2" straight flat for panels, broad trim, door members, and laying off the field between cut lines.

A 1-1/2" angular sash for drawing edges around trim, sash, glass, hardware, and changes of plane.

This is a complete small-job method: cut with the angular, then fill and lay off with the straight width that fits the face. The black natural bristle has more backbone than a soft finishing natural fill and belongs in solvent-borne work where that stiffness helps control an oil film.

Concrete statement false for 81303: 81302 is natural bristle and must stay out of latex; 81303 is polyester and belongs there. Concrete statement false for every straight-only set: 81302 includes an angular sash. Concrete statement false for 81307: 81302's angular is 1-1/2", not 2-1/2", and its fill is natural bristle, not SRT polyester.

Do not generalize “natural bristle” into permission for any aggressive solvent.

Choose 81303 for a first room, trim, door, or furniture project in latex, acrylic, or another label-approved waterborne coating. Its shapes mirror the 81302:

A 1" straight flat for narrow faces and detail.

A 2" straight flat for general trim and panel work.

A 1-1/2" angular sash for the cut line.

The distinction is chemistry: polyester stays springy in water. This is the set to hand a first-time painter who needs both motions and whose can cleans up with water.

Concrete statement false for 81302: 81303 can work in waterborne paint without the water-swelling failure of natural bristle. Concrete statement false for 81304: 81303 has an angular sash but no 3" straight. Concrete statement false for 81307: 81303 has a smaller 1-1/2" angular and an extra 1" straight, but standard polyester rather than SRT.

Use it for the cut-and-detail work around a roller, not to brush an entire wall. On a door or piece of furniture, it can carry the whole hand-brushed job if the faces fit the 1" and 2" flats.

Choose 81304 when waterborne work presents many face widths and the cut lines are forgiving or handled separately. Its 1", 1-1/2", 2", and 3" straight flats reduce the temptation to force one brush onto every member.

1": narrow details and small pickups.

1-1/2": casing, jambs, and intermediate trim the 2" crowds.

2": general trim and frames.

3": broad panels, doors, shelving, and wide boards.

Concrete statement false for 80000: 81304 adds a 1-1/2" intermediate flat. Concrete statement false for 81305: 81304 includes a 1" flat and uses standard polyester rather than SRT. Concrete statement false for 81303 and 81307: all four 81304 brushes are treated as straight flats; none is the angular line brush.

Choose 81305 when the job is waterborne, the paint dries quickly, the visible brushed finish matters, and the useful flat widths are 1-1/2", 2", and 3". It trades the 81304's 1" member and standard filament for an SRT ladder:

1-1/2": narrow visible trim and frames.

2": the general finish brush.

3": broad hand-brushed faces.

Concrete statement false for 81304: 81305 has three SRT flats and no 1"; 81304 has four standard-polyester flats including 1". Concrete statement false for 81307: 81305 gives three straight widths but no angular sash. Concrete statement false for 80000: 81305 begins at 1-1/2" and is SRT rather than a 1"/2"/3" standard-polyester trio.

Choose it when filling and laying off several face widths is the work. If crisp cut lines are also part of the job, add an angular brush or choose 81307.

Choose 81307 when the coating is a fast-drying waterborne paint and the useful kit is the fewest pieces that still perform both motions:

The 2-1/2" angular sash cuts wall-to-ceiling lines, trim edges, sash, frames, and changes of color. Its larger body carries more paint along a long interior line than the 1-1/2" sash in 81303.

The 2" straight flat fills and lays off the door, panel, or trim face inside those lines.

Concrete statement false for 81305: 81307 includes the angular that 81305 lacks, but it offers only one straight width. Concrete statement false for 81303: 81307 uses SRT, has a 2-1/2" angular, and omits the 1" straight. Concrete statement false for 81302: 81307 is synthetic and water-side; it is not the natural-bristle oil set.

This is the most compact complete method in the union. It is not the best set when a job moves constantly among 1", 1-1/2", 2", and 3" faces; that is what a ladder does.

Six common buyer situations

“I am painting a room with ordinary waterborne wall paint.”

Choose 81303 if no cut brush is owned. The 1-1/2" angular cuts the ceiling, corners, casing, and baseboard; the roller covers the wall; the straight brushes handle trim faces and small work. Choose 81307 instead when the paint flashes quickly and the larger SRT sash better fits the long cut lines. Do not choose 80000, 81304, or 81305 as the only brush set unless a separate angular sash is already in the kit.

“I am painting waterborne doors, cabinets, and trim.”

For many face widths, choose 81304. For a finish-focused SRT ladder, choose 81305. If the project includes precise frame, panel, or hardware-adjacent cut lines and only one box is desired, choose 81307; it gives fewer straight widths but includes the angular.

“I am applying an oil enamel or varnish.”

Choose 81302 when the coating label calls for natural bristle. Use the angular to draw the edges and the 1" or 2" straight to lay off the faces. Keep this set segregated from waterborne work, and plan solvent cleanup before opening the can.

“I need several brush sizes for waterborne maintenance work.”

Choose 80000 for the 1"/2"/3" spread. Choose 81304 when the intermediate 1-1/2" matters. Neither contains the geometry of a dedicated angular sash.

“I bought expensive paint, so should I automatically choose SRT?”

Choose by behavior, not the receipt. SRT is earned when the waterborne paint dries fast and the visible hand-brushed film benefits from controlled pickup and release. On ordinary flat paint, careful loading, wet-edge discipline, and timely cleanup matter more than the filament label. For a straight-size ladder, that decision is 81304 versus 81305; for a cut-and-fill method, it is 81303 versus 81307.

“I want one set for oil and latex.”

None of the six is the honest one-box answer. Keep a polyester set for waterborne coatings and a natural-bristle set for traditional solvent-borne coatings. Crossing the 81302 into latex can damage it; repeatedly crossing brushes between incompatible cleanup systems also makes contamination and residue more likely.

Before the first dip

Read the coating label and safety data sheet. Confirm substrate, primer, applicator type, thinning prohibition or allowance, ventilation, protective equipment, cleanup liquid, recoat conditions, and waste instructions. “Paint” is not one chemistry.

Finish the surface. Clean, scrape, fill, sand, remove dust, caulk appropriate joints, and prime where required. Run a raking light across visible trim and panels; the brush will reproduce every uncorrected ridge.

Choose the members before opening the can. Name the angular cut brush and the straight face brush, or name which flat width fits each element. Deciding with wet hands is how one brush gets used for everything.

Inspect each brush dry. Check that the ferrule is secure, the handle is sound, and the filament is not crushed or permanently splayed. Pull only filaments already loose; do not yank sound bristle out while “testing.”

Comb and flex out packing debris. Work a clean brush comb gently from heel toward tips. Flick the brush against the inside of a clean hand or cardboard box, never against a sharp bench edge.

Do not soak the whole brush. Long soaking swells wood, works at ferrule joints, bends the tips, and can attack adhesives. If the coating maker or brush maker calls for conditioning, use only the named liquid, wet only the working filament, and remove the excess completely.

Stir the coating completely. Bring settled pigment and resin back to a uniform mix without whipping in air. If multiple cans will share one visible surface, combine them according to coating-maker practice so small batch differences do not split the finish.

Pour a working quantity into a cut pot. Dipping repeatedly into the full can contaminates the whole supply and makes controlled loading harder. Keep the main container closed when practical.

Plan the route. Top before bottom; far corner toward the exit; edges before adjacent fields while both can still meet wet. On a paneled door, complete logical sections rather than scattering wet starts across the face.

Loading a brush without filling the heel

Dip roughly the working third of the filament, not all the way to the ferrule.

Tap both sides lightly against the inside wall of the working pot. Tapping settles the load through the filament.

Do not scrape both faces hard across the rim. That strips the useful paint from the tips, drives material toward the heel, and leaves the brush starved before it touches the work.

Start the stroke a short distance inside the target area, spread the load, then work toward the edge under control. Landing a fully loaded brush on the finish line is how paint floods past it.

Reload before the stroke becomes dry and scratchy. A brush that is asked to cover after its reservoir is empty leaves ridges and tempts the painter to press harder.

The heel — where filament disappears into the ferrule — should stay damp enough to work but never packed with cured paint. A brush usually dies from accumulation at the heel, not from worn tips.

The angular-sash method: cut the line

This section applies to the angular member in 81302, 81303, or 81307.

Grip near the ferrule like a large pencil. The long corner of the angle is the point; watch it, not the handle.

Load lighter than for a field stroke. Tap the excess. A cut brush needs a controlled reservoir, not a hanging drop.

Set the brush short of the line. Touch down on the paint side, then press just enough to fan the long corner toward the boundary.

Draw, do not dab. Pull a smooth bead with the long point leading. Keep the heel behind the wet edge and the ferrule off the surface.

Work in two passes when control matters. First establish a narrow clean line with a modest load; then widen the painted band behind it so the roller or straight brush can meet it wet.

Use the correct direction. Pulling usually gives the most control. Reverse only when the geometry forces it, and shorten the stroke near corners, glass, or hardware.

Feather the inside edge. The boundary edge stays full; the paint-side edge is brushed out thin enough that the next tool does not leave a raised “hatband.”

Stop reworking as the coating sets. Fast-drying paint first drags, then tears. Reload, move forward, and let the film level within its stated open time.

The 1-1/2" angular in 81302 and 81303 favors short trim and sash work. The 2-1/2" angular in 81307 carries a longer bead on wall and room-scale cut lines. Neither width is categorically “better”; the line length, target width, paint body, and painter's hand decide.

The straight-flat method: fill and lay off

This section applies to every set in the union.

Match the width to the face. A brush wider than the member rides its corners onto adjacent surfaces. A brush much narrower than the member multiplies strokes and laps.

Deposit the load with moderate pressure. Spread paint across the section before trying to make it pretty.

Cross-distribute only while the coating is open. Move the paint enough to make film thickness even; do not scrub it indefinitely.

Lay off with almost no pressure. Make long, light, same-direction finishing strokes. The tips level the film; the heel should not bend over and plow it.

Finish into the wet edge. Each section meets the last before either sets. On doors, shelves, and rails, let the shape of the member define the section.

Tip drips and sags immediately. Use the least-loaded suitable brush, then make one final lay-off with the surrounding grain or member direction.

Leave leveling paint alone. If the brush begins to drag or the film strings, the open-time boundary has arrived. Repair after cure under the coating's recoat instructions rather than tearing the half-set surface.

For a door, cut panel corners and moldings first, fill panel faces, then move through rails and stiles in a consistent sequence. For casing and baseboard, cut the boundaries, fill the face with the closest-width flat, and lay off in the length of the member. For furniture, work complete faces and maintain the final stroke direction with the grain or longest visual axis.

Keeping the brush alive during the job

Do not stand it on its tips. Suspend it, lay it on a clean bridge, or keep the working filament in paint only during an active short interval. Bent wet tips can dry into a permanent hook.

Do not drown the ferrule. Paint above the working filament migrates into the heel, becomes hard to remove, and starts the splay.

Keep the working pot clean. Dried rim fragments, sanding grit, and skin from an old can become defects in the finish.

Comb out a developing heel before it cures. Stop and clean rather than forcing a half-hardened brush through the rest of the day.

For a brief same-coating pause, exclude air. Wrap the loaded filament tightly and keep the brush out of heat and sun.

Do not return contaminated paint. Paint carrying dust, chips, or incompatible solvent stays out of the main can.

Cleanup — waterborne polyester sets

This section applies when 80000, 81303, 81304, 81305, or 81307 has been used in a label-approved waterborne coating.

Work as much usable paint as possible back onto the job or into the working pot. Do not wash a brush still carrying a full load.

Follow the coating label for disposal and wash-water restrictions. “Water cleanup” does not mean paint belongs in a storm drain, septic system, or soil.

Rinse with the label-approved water temperature, then work a small amount of mild soap through the filament.

Massage and comb from the heel toward the tips. Open the filament near the ferrule until no colored ribbon remains hidden there.

Rinse until the water and foam are clear. Repeat the heel check; a brush can look clean at the tip while paint remains packed inside.

Remove water with a brush spinner when appropriate, or shake it out in a controlled area. Never spin toward people or finished work.

Comb the filament straight and restore the original flat or angular profile.

Hang the brush or lay it flat to dry with the tips unsupported and uncrushed. Do not stand it upright on the filament.

Return it to a keeper or wrap it in breathable paper after it is dry. The keeper is a shaping tool, not packaging waste.

Hot water is not automatically better: it can soften some coatings while stressing adhesives and handles. Use warm water unless the coating or brush maker specifies otherwise.

Cleanup — 81302 after traditional oil or alkyd

Plan solvent cleanup before the first dip. The coating label names the cleanup liquid; this guide does not substitute one solvent for another.

Work excess coating out of the brush on the job or into the working pot.

Move to a ventilated, ignition-controlled cleanup area. Keep flame, sparks, pilot lights, smoking, and hot tools away.

Use the smallest practical amount of the label-approved solvent in a suitable container. Work it through the filament and heel; transfer to a second clean rinse when the first is loaded rather than pretending dirty solvent is still cleaning.

Comb from heel to tip while the residue is mobile. Do not leave the wood handle and ferrule soaking in the container.

If the coating and brush maker permit a final soap-and-water wash after solvent cleaning, do it only after the oil residue has been removed. A water rinse cannot replace the solvent step on a solvent-borne film.

Remove liquid, comb the black bristle back into shape, and hang or lay flat to dry.

Keep solvent and coating waste in approved, labeled containers and follow local hazardous-waste instructions. Never pour it into a drain.

Never leave oil- or solvent-wet rags in a wad. Drying oils can self-heat; use an approved closed metal waste container or the exact disposal method on the coating's safety instructions.

Cleaning chemistry is a safety boundary, not brush lore.

What goes wrong — and what the failure tells you

The brush goes limp in latex. Natural bristle was selected for a waterborne coating. Stop before damaging it further; move the work to a polyester set. That is the 81302-versus-81303 error.

The cut line wanders or feels blunt. A straight flat is being asked to do angular-sash work, the angular point was stored bent, the load is too heavy, or the grip is too far back. Change geometry before blaming steadiness.

The brush leaves parallel ridges. Too much pressure, too little paint, a brush too stiff for the open film, or repeated lay-off after setting began. Reload appropriately, lighten the last pass, and stop touching paint that has crossed its open-time boundary.

Paint drips from the ferrule. The brush was dipped too deep or wiped in a way that packed the heel. Clean the ferrule and heel now; do not carry the drip through the job.

Bristles or debris appear in the finish. Loose packing filament was not combed out, the brush is shedding, or dirt entered the pot. Pick the defect out while wet and make one light repair pass.

A 1" brush is taking forever on a door. The wrong width is doing field work. Move to the 2" or 3" member and keep the 1" for the edges and narrow faces.

A 3" brush keeps painting the neighbor. The brush is wider than the member or is being rolled onto its corners. Step down a width.

The finish has a dark or heavy band along the edge. The cut band dried before the adjacent field met it, or the inside edge was not feathered. Coordinate brush and roller timing; do not leave the room perimeter to dry as a separate coat.

Fast-drying latex tears during the last pass. The section is too large, the brush is starved, or the film is already setting. Work smaller, keep the wet edge alive, and consider the SRT choice where earned.

The brush is clean at the tip but stiff at the base. Paint remains in the heel. Re-clean immediately and comb the base; once cured there, the splay is usually permanent.

The angular brush no longer comes to a point. Paint dried in the heel, the tips were stored under load, or the keeper was discarded. Cleaning cannot fully restore filament that has taken a permanent set.

Oil finish remains sticky in the brush after washing with water. The wrong cleanup system was used. Follow the label-approved solvent process; water alone does not remove an uncured solvent-borne resin.

A specialty coating attacks the brush or leaves residue in the next finish. Compatibility was assumed from “synthetic” or “natural.” Stop, consult the coating maker, and dedicate or discard the brush as the chemistry requires.

Safety and chemistry limits that belong in this guide

Ventilation, gloves, eye protection, respiratory protection, and fire controls come from the coating and cleanup-product labels and safety data sheets.

Never thin a coating merely to make a first brush feel easier. Use only the named thinner and permitted amount.

Keep solvents and solvent-wet waste away from ignition sources. Close containers between uses.

Do not use food containers for paint, solvent, or waste.

Keep children and pets out of the work and cleanup zones.

On pre-1978 painted surfaces, disturbing old paint during the preparation that comes before brushing can create lead dust. The brush kit does not change the containment, testing, or EPA RRP obligations.

Unknown old coatings, industrial primers, and two-part finishes may carry hazards that ordinary house-paint practice does not cover. The named product documentation wins.

History — the set is modern packaging around two old trade forms

There is no defensible single inventor of the flat paint brush or the angular sash brush. They are trade patterns: the straight brush evolved to carry and lay a film over a face; the sash brush evolved to paint narrow window members and draw a line with its long corner. A retail “brush set” is packaging, not a third invention. What changed in the modern era was chemistry — natural bristle serving oil coatings, then water-resistant synthetics and tapered synthetic filaments answering the shift toward waterborne, faster-drying paint.

The 80000 packet contains zero accepted exact-model claims. Its 1"/2"/3" straight-polyester content and plastic handles are identity-derived; physically confirm the package.

The other five sets also lack exact manufacturer application copy. Their piece counts, widths, shapes, fill labels, and the 81302/81303 wood handles are listing-identity facts, not a full physical inspection.

Confirm 81307 physically contains the named 2" straight and 2-1/2" angular pair.

SRT expands to Solid Round Tapered and has family-level low-VOC/controlled-release grounding in the Brushes line document; exact-model filament construction and comparative performance have not been independently measured.

No exact bristle length, ferrule metal, filament count, stiffness measurement, brush thickness, country of manufacture, or coating-capacity claim is supported for these six sets.

Natural-bristle and polyester chemistry rules are trade selection doctrine, not blanket compatibility for lacquer, shellac, catalyzed, two-part, or otherwise specialized coatings.

Pre-use conditioning is not specified in the packets.

Exact solvent, protective equipment, ventilation, and disposal method depend on the coating and cleanup product safety data sheets and local rules.

No primary source has been established for a single inventor or invention date of the straight flat, angular sash, or retail brush set; preserve the anonymous-trade-pattern wording.
