A chip brush cannot lay a mark-free film and it can shed a bristle into your topcoat, so it is wrong for finish coats, cut lines, and any surface the customer will look at and keep — that is what the fitted brushes on this wall are for, from the VENUS/MARS utility flats up through the SRT pro brushes.
It is also a poor choice for latex wall paint as anything but a rough one-off: white natural bristle drinks water, goes limp, and flares, so for waterborne paint you want a synthetic-filament brush (the whole Richard synthetic ladder exists for that).
And it is not a precision tool — below about a 1″ line, and inside carved profiles, the 2″ face is simply too big; that is the 1/2″ and 1″ chips' half of the ladder.
a third of the bristle, tips first; a chip brush has less capacity than a fitted paint brush and drips if you drown it. Stroke: for adhesives and stripper, lay the material and leave it — long single-direction passes, minimal reworking. For dusting, dry and light. Never lay-off a finish coat with it: the loose fill and blunt tips leave visible brush marks and can shed, so a chip brush lays working materials, not showing ones. Match the reach to the width: this 2″ face is a field tool; it is wrong inside a molding profile (too wide) and slow across a slab door (too narrow). Disposal: solvent-, oil-, and stripper-soaked bristle is a rag-fire cousin — oil- and finish-laden applicators can self-heat; dry them flat and separated, or drown them in water in a sealed metal can, never wadded in a bag. Cleaning: the honest answer is you generally don't. If you must reuse one for a second session on the same material, wipe it out in the job's own solvent and stand it up — but the format is built to be a consumable, and treating it as one is the correct professional habit, not a failure of thrift.

Is a chip brush just a cheap paint brush?
No — it is the correct brush for solvent, adhesive, epoxy, and stripper work, chosen because natural bristle survives chemistry that destroys synthetic brushes (§1). Using it as your everyday wall brush is the actual mistake.
Why does it shed, and how do I stop it?
Loose-set bristle sheds by design; break it in before the first real stroke — drag, flex, and pull the loose fibers until it stops (§2e). You manage shedding, you don't cure it.
Can I clean and reuse it?
You generally shouldn't; the format is a consumable and the solvent-plus-time to clean it costs more than the brush (§3). Reuse only for a second pass of the same material.
Contact cement, epoxy, or stripper — is 2″ the right size?
Yes for fields and panels; step to 3″/4″ for slab doors and step to 1/2″/1″ for beads and details (§2a, §2b, §5).
Latex wall paint?
Only as a rough one-off — natural bristle goes limp in water; use a synthetic brush for waterborne paint (§4).
How do I throw one out safely after stripper or oil?
Treat it like an oily rag: dry flat and separated, or submerge in water in a sealed metal container — never wadded in a trash bag (§3).
