DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Not the default blade — for ordinary, non-abrasive mill cutting the Standard carbon flats (2607, BG20, BG71A, 088) are the right, cheaper, easier-to-hone choice; HSS is the abrasion upgrade, not a general "better." Not the dense-grabby blade: material that rolls a thin flat edge, or glancing cuts, want a bevel grind — and the line offers HSS in bevel form (62600/62630) for exactly that.
  • Not the short-stroke heavy blade: high-force chopping into thick dense stock is the .109" stub blades' brief.
  • Not a corrosion solution — HSS resists heat and wear, not rust.
  • And not a finished knife.

How the pros run it

01

Buy it for abrasion, not by default

HSS earns its price only where abrasive or filled stock is the edge-killer; for ordinary soft-fiber cutting the Standard carbon flats are cheaper and easier to bring back, and fitting HSS to solve what is really a dull edge or the wrong grind wastes money. Honing is harder — and that is the point. High-speed steel resists wear, so it also resists the stone; it takes more work and rewards a proper abrasive, but hone the flat square, strop the burr, and re-extend the blade as it wears. Heat-resistant is not rust-resistant. HSS is a tool steel, not stainless — keep the blade dry after wet or oily work. Exposure and clamp as with any mounted blade: no longer than the cut needs, set screws tight.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
What does HSS give me over a carbon flat blade?
Wear life against abrasive stock. High-speed steel holds its edge far longer on filled fiber, cord, and rubberized material, so an abrasive station changes blades much less often. On ordinary soft fiber, a carbon blade is cheaper and easier to hone.
Why is it 6-3/8" and the 088 HSS is 6-1/2"?
An eighth of an inch, and that is the only listed difference between them — the choice is really which pattern your plant already stocks.
The variant tag says "Standard" — is it carbon or HSS?
The catalog product name says HSS ("Flat Grind HSS Mill Blade 5532M"), and this guide treats it as high-speed steel; a hydetools variant tag reading "Standard" conflicts and is flagged for Hyde to resolve .
Is it stainless?
No — HSS is a tool steel that resists heat and wear, not corrosion. Keep it dry.
Does it need a handle, and which one?
Yes — it is a bare blade. The 3/4" width takes the 63085 or 63080 handle.

EASY TO ORDER AND GOOD DELIVERY

The blades work great in out belt slitter. They last a long time too.
