Skiving happens at the bottom of the leather, right against the bench, so work on a hard, smooth, seamless slab — marble, granite, thick glass, or dense hardwood — never a self-healing cutting mat, which lets the leather sink mid-stroke, steepens the angle on its own, and dives the blade through. Flesh side up. Skiving removes the loose-fibered flesh side and keeps the dense grain face that folds, wears, and shows. Razor-keen or nothing.
