The surface is part of the knife

Skiving happens at the bottom of the leather, right against the bench, so use a hard, smooth, seamless slab — marble, granite, thick glass, or dense hardwood. A self-healing cutting mat lets the leather sink mid-stroke, changes the blade angle, and can drive the edge through. Work flesh side up. Skiving removes the loose-fibered flesh side while leaving the dense grain face that folds, wears, and shows. Keep the blade razor-sharp. If a skiver needs a push, squeaks, or tears, the edge needs attention. Strop by feel as you work. The edge signals dullness in the cut — ribbons turn to crumbs, and the clean hiss starts to sound like tearing. At the first tear, stop, take ten laps per side on the strop, then get back to work; for most hands that is every few minutes. Hardened high-carbon steel rewards steady maintenance: strop often, stone only when needed, and wipe the blade dry after any casing-damp session, because carbon steel can rust overnight. The .042" blade is made to be kept keen for years, unlike the utility line’s snap-and-discard blades.

What is skiving?
Thinning a leather edge by shaving thin layers off the flesh side, so the edge folds flat, stitches without bulk, or cements into an invisible lap. It is not cutting through.
Why is the blade so thin?
So it can flex and follow the surface it is shaving. The .042" gauge is the thinnest in the line, and it is deliberate — a stiff blade planes a flat cut instead of following the leather.
Is the "round point" a round (head) knife?
No. It is simply a radiused tip on a straight skiver, so the low-riding blade has no corner to catch. The saddler's half-moon round knife is a different tool, not in this line.
Can it skive sole leather?
No — dense sole stock folds a thin skiver. That is the #3 Sole skiver's (55190) heavier .072" job.
How do I keep it sharp?
Strop in rhythm — every few minutes of skiving, at the first tearing note — and stone it only when the strop stops bringing it back. Wipe it dry after cased-damp work; it is high-carbon steel.
