Support the far end. At this length the tip is far from your hand; on a long trim cut, mind that the unheld end stays seated in the crease and hasn't lifted off the line. Smooth at a low angle in the smoothing trade — a long stiff edge steepened toward perpendicular scrapes rather than spreads, and on a wide stroke that magnifies any damage to delicate stock. Guard the edge. A nick tracks a line down every vinyl stroke and a dinged shield edge stops sealing; dress or retire a damaged edge. Super or Mini?
Long ceiling and base trims, full-height commercial strips, broad compound skims → the Super (24-1/2"). Short cuts, tight corners, sash and casing scale, apron carry → the Mini (11-1/2"). The Super strides where the Mini takes three seats; the Mini reaches pockets the Super can't enter.
Is this a paint shield or a wallpaper tool?
Both, plus a smoother — that is the point. Hyde's name "Smoothing/Trim Tool" names two trades; the "Paint Shield" title names the third. Paperhangers meet it as a guide; painters meet it as a long shield.
Why steel instead of the aluminum shields?
Because its trades are wet (paste, compound) and want a hard, thin, rust-free edge that draws a truer razor line — and because its blade reaches past the handle into the corner. It gives up the curved shields' ability to conform to carpet and cupped surfaces to get those.
Can I do a window sash with it?
No — 24-1/2 inches won't turn among muntins. Use the Mini (45805) on straight bars or the curved 45000 on old sash.
Will paste and joint compound rust it?
No — stainless is chosen for exactly that; wipe or rinse it clean at day's end (2b, §3).
