Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • Flexible metal tool with a paint pad on one end that reaches into window sashes, radiators or other hard-to-reach areas for finish painting. Metal handle can be bent out of the way for a better hand position.
DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Broad, flat, or fast painting. A pad on a bent handle is a precision reach tool, not a coverage tool — a wall, a flush door, or the face of a flat sash rail is a brush-or-roller job. Use the 45042 where access beats area; the moment area wins, put it down.
  • Heavy build or texture. The thin pad lays a controlled finish film, not a thick coat; it will not build a heavy body or work a textured surface.
  • Removing anything. No edge, no scrape — it does not lift paint, clear putty, or shave overspray. The glass gets cleaned by a razor scraper, the putty by the 02950, the failed paint by a scraper or multi-tool. This tool only adds finish.
  • Not the glazing steps. It does not cut the pane (45700), hold it (45760), remove old putty or strike the bevel (02950). It shows up when all of that is done and cured, to paint the result.

EXACT JOB METHODS FOR HYDE №45042

How the pros run it

01

Load light, reload often

The pad is a metering device, not a reservoir — a small charge gives a controlled line, a heavy charge floods the very angle you bought the tool to keep clean.
02

Bend the handle to the work, not the work to your wrist

The metal handle is meant to be shaped so the pad meets the surface flat. Set the bend before you load, present the pad square, and let the geometry do what your wrist can't.
03

Draw, don't dab

Pull the pad along the run in the direction of the line; dabbing loads the corner and breaks the edge you're trying to cut.
04

Glass cleanup is a dry, later job

Any paint on the glass past the 1/16" lap comes off with a razor after it has dried — scraping wet paint smears it and can pull the lap you want to keep.
05

Pre-1978 sashes carry lead

Windows are friction surfaces whose painted edges have been grinding to dust for a century; any prep — scraping or sanding the old sash before this finish coat — is where the lead exposure lives and calls for wet methods and containment. The painting step itself makes no dust, but the sash it paints is old, and the boundary travels with the job (reglaze-a-single-pane-window, step 2).

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
What's it actually for?
Finish-painting where access is tight — most of all, painting a cured glazing putty line and lapping the paint 1/16" onto the glass to seal the joint. Also radiators and other hard-to-reach spots.
Why not just use a brush?
A brush floods the muntin-to-glass angle and can't reach behind radiator columns or bent-around a sash bar. The pad cuts that angle clean, and the bendable handle presents it where a brush can't go.
How does the handle help?
It bends, so you can shape it to put the pad flat against a surface your wrist can't square up to.
Do I paint the putty right away?
No — putty must cure and be primed first (days to weeks, per the compound), then paint and lap onto the glass.
How do I get paint off the glass?
After it dries, shave it with a razor scraper — never wipe it wet, which smears it and can pull the lap.
What's the pad made of?
A retailer lists mohair; Hyde's own record says only "paint pad." Treat mohair as unconfirmed until verified against official art.
