DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Tempered glass — it cannot be cut, by anyone.
  • Tempering locks the surface in compression and the core in tension; any score or nick releases the whole balance at once and the panel bursts into a heap of small cubes (Dillmeier — can you cut tempered glass).
  • All sizing of tempered glass happens before tempering, at the factory.
  • Check the old pane's corners for an etched certification "bug" (ANSI Z97.1 / CPSC 16 CFR 1201); if it has one, this tool's job is measuring for a replacement order, not cutting.
  • Safety-glazing locations — a code boundary, not advice.

How the pros run it

01

One pass, never re-run

The single law of glass cutting: score the line once, firmly, in one continuous motion, and never run the wheel back over its own score. A second pass crushes the score shut, guarantees a ragged break, and puts a flat on the carbide wheel — it is how good cutters die young. A bad score is abandoned, not deepened: snap that piece off and recut on fresh glass, well clear of the old line.
02

Wheel vertical, pressure firm and even

Hold the cutter like a pencil, low, with the wheel square to the glass in both directions — a tilted wheel scores a bevel and the break follows the bevel, not your line. Press to firm arm-weight, a few pounds, learned on scrap.
03

Oil the wheel

Trade practice, not a package instruction — the record specifies the wheel and the work, not a lubricant — but a drop of light machine oil or kerosene keeps the score clean and "open," quiets the wheel, and extends its life. A fresh carbide wheel will make a one-off cut dry; the drop costs nothing.
04

Listen

A good score sounds like tearing silk — a fine, steady hiss — and leaves a faint even line. A gritty crunch spitting white dust is too much pressure and will break ragged; silence with skips is too little pressure or a dry wheel.
05

Snap promptly, then seam

A score starts healing the moment it's made; snap within a minute or two, over a dowel or the bench edge, one decisive motion. Then kill the razor-sharp fresh edge — glaziers call it seaming — with a light pass of a fine stone or wet silicon-carbide paper at 45°. Cut-resistant gloves and safety glasses from before the snap.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
How much smaller than the opening do I cut the glass?
1/8" under in each direction, measured to the smaller number of each out-of-square pair — glass must never touch wood. Full method: cut-a-replacement-pane-to-size.
Can I cut tempered glass with it?
No — nobody can. Tempered glass shatters entirely at any score. Check the corner for a certification bug; if present, order a tempered replacement.
Steel wheel or carbide?
Tungsten carbide, confirmed by Hyde's own specification and product page — it stays sharp far longer than the steel-wheel cutters it descends from. (One retailer's "steel alloy" listing is simply wrong.)
Will it cut mirrors?
Yes — score the glass face, never the silvered back, and pad the bench to protect the coating.
Curved cuts?
Rated for them (official claim); score freehand or to a template with the same one-pass discipline, then coax the break to run.
Do I have to oil it?
Not mandatory for a one-off dry cut, but a drop of light oil on the wheel gives a cleaner, more consistent score and longer wheel life.
Why re-cut instead of scoring twice?
Because a re-run score breaks ragged and flats the wheel — the one unforgivable move in glass cutting.
