Retract or fix your carry discipline to the knife

Because the pouch holds the knife blade-exposed, a retractable knife should be retracted before it goes in (the holster carries the handle; the edge should not be live on your hip if the knife can hide it), and a fixed-blade knife rides with a permanently live edge — position the pouch where a stumble won't drive it into your leg, and treat the whole rig as sharp. Seat it fully. Drop the knife home so it can't bounce out when you kneel or climb. Keep the leather conditioned. Top-grain leather lasts years if it isn't left soaked; wipe it down and let it dry, and an occasional dressing keeps it from cracking. Mind the belt width — the 2-1/2" slots want a standard work belt; a much narrower belt lets the pouch swing.
