  • Four inches cannot feather a seam's hump out to invisibility — that is the job of 8"–12" fill and skim blades that ride flat wall on both sides of the joint while the middle carries mud.
  • Push a 4" across a wide fill and it leaves tram-lines at the blade corners.
  • It is also not the final feather-to-zero blade (reach for the extra-flexible ExtraFlex/SuperFlexx tier), and not a demolition scraper.
  • The 4" is the start of the seam sequence and the master of fasteners, corners, and patches — not the leveller.

How the pros run it

Embedding pressure

is the skill: firm and even on the tape draw, biased slightly so the trailing edge wipes the tape tight without lifting it. Angle stays low so the blade screeds rather than gouges. The Hammer Head wants a tap, not a swing — it sets fasteners, it is not a framing hammer. The carbon ritual is the price of the feel: wash the blade the instant it is idle and dry it, or a rust bloom will stain your next coat and pit the edge where the finish wears; a wiped, lightly-oiled carbon blade stays bright for years. Edge care: dress dents square with a mill file so the blade lays flat and reads no ridges into the coat.

How is it different from the 06577 and 06578 at the same width?
This is carbon (keen edge, rusts, must be dried) with a Hammer Head; the 06577 is one-piece stainless (hose-off), the 06578 is double-hollow-ground stainless with a cushion grip. (See §5.)
Will it do my seams' fill coats?
No — 4" is the tape coat; fill and skim need 8"–12". (See §4.)
Does it rust?
Yes if left wet — carbon. Wash and dry after every use. (See §3.)
